Officials from the U.S. Departments of Agriculture, Health and Human Services, and Education recently met with GENYOUth’s National Youth Council to talk about their career paths and garner students’ perspectives on nutrition and physical activity in schools. The students also learned about the important and interrelated roles these agencies play in helping ensure students are nourished and active to be their best selves. A special thanks to the U.S. Department of Education's Andrew Palczewski, USDA's Alberto A. González, Jr., MPP and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Malorie Polster, MPH, CHES for speaking with our Council members, and to GENYOUth Chief Wellness Officer Karen E. Kafer, RDN for moderating this insightful discussion.

About us
GENYOUth is a national non-profit organization which creates healthier school communities. We convene a network of private and public partners to raise funds for youth wellness initiatives that give youth the inspiration to be healthy high-achieving students. GENYOUth's Pillars of Purpose guide our mission to empower America's youth: Give Youth A Voice -- We elevate student voices to lead and solve real world problems. Through GENYOUth Insights, we work to uncover and share knowledge and up-to-date information on America’s youth by generating ideas, publishing reports, and channeling actionable intelligence. Enhance Nutrition and Physical Activity in Schools – We are deeply committed to ensuring all youth have the resources in their schools to lead healthy, productive lives. Two flagship programs, Fuel Up to Play 60 with America’s Dairy Farmers and the NFL, and NFL FLAG-In-Schools, engage tens of thousands of schools and tens of millions of students every year. And with research showing that girls drop out of sports at twice the rate as boys, our Root4Her program will work with schools and other stakeholders in 2022 to level the playing field. GENYOUth’s longstanding commitment to providing school nutrition grants to increase access to healthy school meals has taken on added importance with the pandemic; our End Student Hunger Fund has raised over $12 million in support of over 10,000 schools, and the critical need to feed continues with grant request from thousands of schools being met by fundraising initiatives like 2022 Taste of the NFL. Nurture Youth Leadership and Workforce Readiness -- GENYOUth empowers students to raise their voice, lead with passion and purpose, and imagine the possibilities to make their world, schools and communities a healthier place. Adventure Capital is a social entrepreneurship program that funds student-led solutions by motivating and empowering participants to make changes in school and community health and wellness.

As #NationalDairyMonth concludes, let’s give the mic 🎤 to two of GENYOUth’s most committed dairy champions – Barbara O'Brien, GENYOUth Board Chair & CEO of Dairy Management, Inc.; and Audrey Donahoe, a dairy farmer, GENYOUth Board Member, and Chair of the National Dairy Council to talk about the critical role dairy plays in nourishing children. We are #grateful to America’s Dairy Farmers 🐄, a founding partner of GENYOUth, for their support of GENYOUth’s efforts to help schools provide students healthy and nutritious dairy products 🥛. Together we will #EndStudentHunger!

Ask Barbara O'Brien what it takes to succeed in her CEO roles at Dairy Management Inc. and Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy; and as Board Chair of GENYOUth, and she will – not surprisingly – focus on America’s dairy farmers. Her commitment to listening, building trust, and taking action are helping to deliver nutritious dairy foods to nourish students’ bodies and minds. “My passion and admiration for dairy farmers, grounded in their values of hard work and humility, are central to who I am. I am grateful for their tireless efforts every day to nourish America’s children and their support, as co-founder of GENYOUth, to enable greater access to school meals and school milk.” #NationalDairyMonth #EndStudentHunger
