Did you know that in the late 1800s, Y immigration secretaries greeted hundreds of thousands of new arrivals at Ellis Island (New York) and Angel Island (San Francisco), helping them locate family members, housing and employment? During Immigrant Heritage Month, we celebrate the Y's history of helping immigrants and their receiving communities join together to create inclusive environments where all can thrive. #YForAll

🇨🇴 Colombia teen trip update with staff member, Shawn Milford: "This has been an amazing week. Our hosts took us to Camp Bochica - a Y camp similar to, but very different from, YMCA Camp Lakewood. The Gateway Y has a long history here and it was amazing to walk on the stone path laid by previous volunteers from our Association! We worked hard on two service projects: repairing a kid's obstacle course designed into the beautiful (but rocky!) landscape! The other project was painting the globe with a highlight of Colombia and a heart over STL. We all signed the bottom of the globe. We have 6 Gateway teens, 8 Colombian teens, and we each have 2 staff chaperones. Juan Carlos and Natalia were amazingly kind and so helpful with translations. We also toured a coffee farm in the forest and learned about the coffee-making process, from planting all the way to drinking! This country is just so beautiful!" 🌎 Our Y gives local teens the chance to travel internationally to a country served by a partner YMCA, where they focus on service and cross-cultural education. This year, Y staff, Shawn Milford and Amelia Wagner, are joined by 6 teens from the Mid-County Family YMCA, Emerson YMCA, Monroe County YMCA - HTC Center, East Belleville YMCA, O'Fallon Park Rec Complex, and South City Family YMCA.
