About us

Friends of the Urban Forest bring neighbors together to plant and care for street trees and sidewalk gardens in San Francisco. We are committed to growing San Francisco’s urban forest, building community, and taking a local leadership role in climate solutions through the simple act of planting trees and gardens. Since 1981, we have planted about 60,000 trees, totaling about half of San Francisco's street trees.

  • Let's give it up for Cancer season by celebrating the Peppermint Willow! Cancers are highly sensitive and intuitive. Though it's unpredictable in its growth pattern, the Peppermint Willow takes on a graceful weeping form with narrow willowy leaves, and is willing to do whatever it takes to protect itself emotionally. Its aromatic oils represent Cancer’s ability to exist in both emotional and material realms.

  • Welcome, Gemini season! Why Lemon Bottlebrush tree, you ask? Gemini are always down to have a good time, but their mood can suddenly change at any moment. Similar to a Gemini, the Lemon Bottlebrush is striking, bright, playful, and at times erratic. Adorned with clusters of red bottlebrush-like flowers that appear in waves, the Lemon Bottlebrush’s beauty can leave you in awe as it sways beautifully in the wind. Like a true Gemini, it is spontaneous, playful, and at times, erratic.
