Principal investigators working at Fred Hutch and UW Medicine secured $5.25 million in grants from the Kuni Foundation for a diverse lineup of projects to advance our understanding of tumor regression and improve care for an array of adult cancers, including by reducing the cost of therapy. The projects will explore why some cancerous tumors shrink or disappear without treatment; test whether the immunotherapy nivolumab works when given less often and at lower doses; investigate what drives disparities in breast cancer screenings; evaluate a method to detect and treat liver tumors earlier by selectively delivering radiation to tumor cells; and lay the groundwork for personalized hyperthermic peritoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for cancer on the lining of the abdomen. Each awardee will receive $1,050,000 over three years. Read more: https://bit.ly/3W6L3j5

Last Thursday, a tenacious “mom in tennis shoes” who went on to become Chair of the U.S. Senate’s powerful Appropriations Committee stopped by Fred Hutch Cancer Center for an update on its women’s health research. Sen. Patty Murray, senior Democratic senator from Washington state, toured labs and clinics, met scientists young and old, and learned about a new experimental therapy designed to prevent metastatic breast cancer. She also visited and spoke with a patient and dedicated clinical trial participant. “It was great to see the impressive new treatment and lab facilities at Fred Hutch and talk with so many doctors and scientists who are at the cutting edge of eliminating cancer and making important discoveries in the field of women’s health,” Murray said after the visit. “Fred Hutch is on the cutting edge of ending cancer and improving cancer outcomes for women. It’s exciting to see them continue to play a critical role in President Biden’s Cancer Moonshot, which I am going to keep working to support as we negotiate and write our government funding bills.” Read more: https://bit.ly/4cJ0mnj

Researchers once hoped they could invent a drug increasing a hormone called leptin that would suppress appetite and reduce obesity. But they ran into a brick wall called “leptin resistance” and moved on. Fred Hutch scientists working with fruit flies may have found a way around that brick wall, reviving hope for a drug that restores leptin’s signaling function. Read more: https://bit.ly/3RR3y8m

In the 40+ years since AIDS was originally identified in the United States, breakthroughs in medicine have made HIV much less deadly. With treatment, people living with HIV can often have a similar life expectancy to those who don't live with HIV. But the virus that has led to more than 40 million deaths worldwide since 1981 still has no cure or vaccine — and is still shrouded in stigma and misinformation. “HIV is still with us,” said virologist Dr. Larry Corey, who co-founded Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center’s global HIV Vaccine Trials Network the world’s largest publicly funded collaboration focusing on developing an HIV vaccine. “It’s still quite a persistent problem. And education about HIV prevention is a critical need.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gYF-3s7z

Thanks to U.S. Women's Soccer legend Briana Scurry for visiting Fred Hutch's South Lake Union campus this week! The World Cup champion, two-time Olympic gold medalist, and member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame was here as part of our Forward Together Breast Cancer event, where we talked about the progress our dedicated physician-scientists have made for today’s patients and the discoveries they’re pursuing for tomorrow’s.

A record number of applicants vied this year for grants of up to $15,000 from the Community Grants Program, which supports projects to reduce cancer health disparities in Washington state. Ten organizations serving counties across the state will use the funds to increase access to screenings, provide mental health care for people with low income, mentor early-career oncologists and more. “This year, our request for applications was aligned with the community health needs assessment we do every three years,” said Liz Tallent, community health education manager for the Fred Hutch Office of Community Outreach & Engagement, which operates the grants program. “The assessment helps us identify who is at highest risk for cancer in our state, who has the highest burden of cancer incidence or mortality, and which are the top cancer sites.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gqCnyamd
