📌Striving to obtain food safety certifications, many #SMEs in Nepal face affordability challenges. Food Enterprise Solutions is addressing this gap by implementing the Feed the Future Business Drivers for Food Safety (funded by USAID) Pre-HACCP Validation Badge Program in #Nepal. 🔶Earning this badge is a way for SMEs to show that a 3rd party has validated their #foodsafety practices, hygienic operations, and allows them to prepare for a full #HACCP #audit. 🔶Check out the BD4FS Nepal Pre-HACCP Validation Badge Program Technical Learning Note:🔗https://lnkd.in/d8iS7t-5

📌 By: Thoric Cederström Reducing post-harvest #foodloss among small and medium-sized enterprises (#SMEs) is crucial for mitigating climate change and ensuring #foodsecurity. SMEs play a significant role in the food supply chain, especially in developing countries, where they often lack #resources and infrastructure to prevent food losses effectively. By implementing various strategies tailored to their needs, SMEs can minimize post-harvest losses and contribute to climate change mitigation efforts. One approach is improving storage facilities and transportation infrastructure. Many SMEs operate with inadequate storage facilities, leading to spoilage and waste. Investing in better storage technologies such as cold storage, drying facilities, and airtight containers can extend the shelf life of perishable goods. Additionally, upgrading transportation infrastructure to reduce transit times and minimize damage during transit can further prevent losses. Another strategy involves implementing proper handling and packaging techniques. Improper handling and packaging can accelerate food spoilage and deterioration. Training SME workers on best practices for handling and packaging can significantly reduce losses. Utilizing innovative packaging materials that prolong freshness and prevent contamination can also make a significant impact. Furthermore, promoting market linkages and value-added processing can help SMEs utilize surplus produce effectively. By connecting SMEs with larger markets, cooperatives, and retailers, they can sell their products more efficiently, reducing the likelihood of unsold inventory. Value-added processing, such as drying, can transform surplus perishable goods into non-perishable products, extending their shelf life and creating new revenue streams. Implementing post-harvest management technologies and solutions tailored to SMEs’ needs can further enhance efficiency and reduce losses. This includes adopting digital solutions for inventory management, quality control, and traceability, allowing SMEs to identify and address potential losses more effectively. Moreover, raising awareness and providing capacity-building support to SMEs on climate-smart agricultural practices can empower them to adopt #sustainablefarming methods that reduce post-harvest losses. Techniques such as crop rotation, proper irrigation, and integrated pest management not only improve yield but also enhance resilience to climate change-induced challenges. In conclusion, reducing #postharvest food loss among SMEs is essential for mitigating #climatechange and ensuring food security. By investing in infrastructure, improving handling and packaging, promoting market linkages, adopting technology, and embracing sustainable agricultural practices, SMEs can play a significant role in minimizing food losses and contributing to a more sustainable future. https://lnkd.in/d4PuY37x
