  • The grades are in! Our 2024 #PovertyReportCards show that very little has changed since we first launched this initiative last fall, and that, in many ways, poverty and food insecurity are actually worsening across the country. With all but 3 provinces on the edge of failing and Canada’s overall score being downgraded to D-, it is very clear that governments at all levels simply aren’t taking enough action to address the unprecedented level of financial struggle faced by people across Canada. As nearly half of all Canadians feel financially worse off compared to 2023, we have seen a 30% increase in food bank demand in the last year alone, and 1 in 4 people in Canada experiencing food insecurity. The situation is urgent, and we simply cannot continue to accept it as the status quo. To see how your province is stacked up and how we think your government can ensure a Canada where no one goes hungry, please visit: https://lnkd.in/g5Cn_T7t

  • It’s #GroceryHeroesDay – a time to recognize employees at every level for their support of Food Banks Canada’s #RetailFoodProgram. With nearly 1 in 4 people in Canada experiencing poverty and food insecurity, this program and the partnerships built between local food banks and grocery retailers are more important than ever. Donations made by our grocery hero partners, Loblaw Companies Limited, SkipTheDishes, and Walmart Canada, allow us to help food banks across the country distribute approx. 20 million pounds of safe, surplus food to their neighbours in need each year. Thank you! #FoodRecovery #FoodRescue #SurplusFood #Sustainability #ReduceWaste #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #ZeroWaste

TELUS. Empowering well-being and mental health. As people deserve.

Summer means fun for many, but for hundreds of thousands of children across Canada, it ends essential school meal programs, plunging them into hunger. My latest think piece, written in collaboration with and for Food Banks Canada | Banques alimentaires Canada explores the impactful work of the vital 'After the Bell' food program. In this article, we delve into how Food Bank Canada's hunger relief program is providing nutritious food to children across the country during the summer months. This initiative is not just about feeding hungry mouths but about nurturing young minds and ensuring every child has the opportunity to enjoy their summer break without the shadow of hunger looming over them. Join me in exploring the profound impact of the 'After the Bell' program and learn how you can support Food Banks Canada in their mission to end child hunger once and for all. Together, we can make a difference and transform summer from a time of dread into a season of joy, nourishment, and health. • Child hunger is a significant issue in Canada, accounting for 33% of food bank visits, yet children only represent 19% of the overall population. Thanks to ACN's ongoing support, we are making great strides toward our mission of a Canada where no one goes hungry. ACN's donation of 50,000 meals will make a huge difference in feeding families and children across the country. Thank you, ACN! #weareacn

  • Good Neighbours Food Centre in Rosthern, SK, recently held a grand opening to celebrate the transition from a traditional food bank to a free food market. The food bank now operates using a grocery store model, allowing people struggling with food insecurity to choose the items they want instead of relying on pre-made food hampers. Executive Director Betty Rudachyk shared that the idea has been in development for several years. She stated, "It was the vision and dream from the early days of this food bank to have a system that would show more dignity, respect, and empowerment for people in need of food assistance." The grocery store model has proven to be especially beneficial for individuals with medical, cultural, and religious dietary requirements. "We are committed to ensuring that everyone who walks through our doors feels acknowledged, listened to, and respected," says Rudachyk. As food bank usage continues to grow in Canada, it's important to maintain operational efficiency while promoting client dignity.
