Several of our Lefteroff Interns got to visit the Mechanical Engineering lab at Stanford University School of Engineering, where they met with innovators Christopher Strand and Juliana Perl and learned about a project in development called Exhalos, a disease breathalyzer for detecting necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in newborns. NEC affects 1 of 1000 premature infants with mortality rates up to 50%. The Exhalos team won a $100k Platinum Award at the UCSF-Stanford Pediatric Device Consortium pitch competition earlier this year and is currently participating in Fogarty's Invention Acceleration Program (IAP). #summerlearning #pediatric #innovation 📷: Bernie Andreas

"Together, the two papers provide strong evidence that the data is accurate, reliable, and in answer to the critical question 'So What?' - clinically useful and actionable." Congratulations to the G-Tech Medical team on this important progress in its mission to take the guesswork out of GI motility evaluation. 👏
Do you or a close friend or family member have an annoying or debilitating gastrointestinal issue? – trick question – of course you (or they) do. Estimates range from 15 to 50% of the population; in my family it’s closer to the latter. As you may know, at G-Tech we’re trying to help. In the last week or so we’ve had two manuscripts accepted for publication: “A Novel Pilot Study to Evaluate the Efficacy and Safety of a Wireless Patch System in Patients With Chronic Nausea and Vomiting” in Neurogastroenterology & Motility, and “Perioperative Gastrointestinal Myoelectric Activity Measurement Using Wireless External Patches” in the Journal of Surgical Research. The first study was done at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville and shows that the our GutTracker™ system had better diagnostic yield than the gold standard test for gastroparesis, gastric emptying scintigraphy. The second was a study on Yucatan mini-pigs done at Stanford, which shows that our non-invasive, abdominal patch based measurements of GI motor activity have high fidelity to those made with internally implanted electrodes. If you’ve been an author you know how much work goes into writing scientific journal articles. It took a forever long time for the reviewers to provide their (admittedly helpful!) comments, and then agree that we had addressed them in our rapidly-but-carefully-compiled responses. For months now, first thing I did every morning was check email for the notification. It’s quite a coincidence that the two came through at nearly the same time, maybe there's a season for it, like in sports 😉. Whatever, I’m relieved, and grateful to all the co-authors for their contributions to the Science and the writing. Together, the two papers provide strong evidence that the data is accurate, reliable, and in answer to the critical question So What?, clinically useful and actionable.

"Thank you for creating this space and workshop. I feel so grateful to have been given access to all of this information and all of these incredible people." - DxD HealthTech Exploration Workshop participant #DEIB #medtech #community
That’s a wrap! DxD's two-day HealthTech Exploration workshop concluded at Fogarty Innovation with a packed afternoon of personal stories and medtech case studies. A panel moderated by DxD executive director Ingrid Ellerbe explored the diversity of career paths in the field, featuring Aisha White, MD, MBA, Joyce H. N. Nortey, MPH, MSBH, Willieford Moses, MD, and Juan-Pablo Mas. Then, we took a deep dive into two medtech case studies -- hearing from Autumn Ehnow of nonprofit pharma organization Medicines360 and Eric Chehab's startup Novonate, which was acquired by Laborie. "Thank you for creating this space and workshop," wrote one of the interns. "I feel so grateful to have been given access to all of this information and all of these incredible people." #DxDSummer #DiversitybyDoing

Summer interns participating in DxD’s Healthtech Exploration Workshop got a peek into the power of the Biodesign process this morning. Led by Juliana Perl, the students practiced creating need statements and brainstormed solutions in lively small group discussions coached by Kay Hung, Allie Knauer, Patrick Lo, Ravi Dy Pamnani, Stephanie Toney, MBA, Vic McCray, MD, and Stacie Arechavala. A huge thank you to the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign team, Fogarty Innovation for hosting, and the students for their energetic engagement in the process! #DxDSummer #DiversitybyDoing 📷 credits: Stacey Paris McCutcheon & Christine Byrd

Where dreams meet opportunity: the Diversity by Doing (DxD) HealthTech Exploration Workshop is off to powerful start, with over 60 college interns from groups historically underrepresented in STEM, all of whom are interning at #medtech companies across the country. Over the course of a jam-packed two days, the students will interact with a larger community of industry experts, mentors, and peers as they go through career and personal development sessions, speed mentoring, innovation-focused case studies and career panels, and a workshop on the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign Innovation Process. Stay tuned for more!

Before mental health apps: several of our Lefteroff Interns had the pleasure of meeting Hamm, one of four Leonbergers owned by Boomerang Medical CEO Heather Simonsen. Per Heather, Leonbergers originated in the 1800s in Leonberg, Germany and are a mix of Great Pyrenees, St. Bernard and Newfoundland. They are used for therapy dogs (as well as water rescue) and there are some on the East Coast that arrive via helicopter after disasters to help lift spirits.

In their first weeks with us, the 2024 Lefteroff Interns participate in numerous "101" lectures in which they explore specific topics with different members of the Fogarty staff. For example, Greg Bakan presented on Driving Towards a Career, Marga Ortigas-Wedekind spoke on Commercialization, Craig Straley discussed Clinical Evidence, John Morriss covered Quality Systems/Product Development, and more. The presentations provide a foundation of industry understanding, help the interns learn who to go to for assistance in different areas, and most importantly, help everyone to get to know each other. #summerlearning #FogartyFamily
