Did you know that eliminating beef and adopting a vegetarian diet would only reduce a household's greenhouse gas emissions by 3%? That is fewer emissions than you would save by avoiding ONE round-trip flight from Denver to London. If you are interested in reducing your carbon footprint, there are much more impactful and immediate ways to do so like reducing your home’s individual foot waste, utilizing recycling systems, and using optimal heat and cool settings on your home’s HVAC unit. #sustainability #beef #cattlefeeding #5rivers #FiveRiversFacts #carbon #emissions #recycling #carbonfootprint

Do you know how the United States cowherd is distributed? Based on the cattle inventory report, you can see that distribution here: 32.4% Beef Cows: the mature female cowherd that is actively breeding and grazing year after year 15.2% Calves: offspring still on mother’s side 10.7% Dairy Cows: mature, milking females 10.2% Replacement Heifers: the young female population intending to be bred and enter the cow herd 12.5% Stockers: calves currently weaned and on grass, destined for feedyard placement 2.3% Bulls: male counterparts as active breeding stock 16.5% On Feed: steers and heifers (dairy and beef) on feed currently This information can also help us see that over 70% of the United States cowherd is utilizing grass and maintaining healthy grasslands while the other <30% are finishing in an efficient feeding system or are maintaining a high-energy diet through a dairy production cycle. As we continue this conversation and talk about the benefits of cattle and their impact on the environment, we think this is a great place to start, knowing how the US cowherd is truly distributed and what those life cycles look like. #beef #cattle #cattlefeeding #USBeef #FiveRiversFacts #uscowherd #sustainabilit

Did you know cattle produce so much more than beef? May is #beefmonth, and we are sharing some of our favorite beef facts! No part of a cow goes to waste in beef production, meaning we utilize the skin, manure, blood, bones, hooves, organs, hair, and even fat! Makeup, dyes, adhesives, medicines, sports equipment, candies, fertilizer, vitamins, film, air filters, paint, fabric softener, textiles, and fireworks are just a FEW byproducts from cattle. That is pretty impressive! #beef #cattle #5rivers #FiveRiversFacts #agriculture

Did you know 86% of livestock feed is not edible or nutritionally relevant to humans? While 13% of cattle’s diets are comprised of grain, much of their diet consists of upcycled byproducts of human food production, crop residues, and roughage from otherwise unproductive grasslands. “If not consumed by livestock, crop residues and by-products could quickly become an environmental burden as the human population grows,” said the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, “Cattle thus contribute directly to global food security.” Happy #BeefMonth! #FiveRiversFacts #CarbonSink #GHG #environmental #5Rivers #CattleFeeding #Beef #BetterwithBeef #Essential #StewardsoftheLand #BeefFacts #FoodForThought

We are continuing with our fun beef facts in May for #BeefMonth! Did you know cattle outnumber people in nine states? You are more likely to come across a cow than a person in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Iowa. We are proud to have feedyards in three of these beef states! Photo by: Emily Nicole Photography #beef #cattlefeeding #5rivers #FiveRiversFacts #idahobeef #oklahomabeef #kansasbeef

Did you know Five Rivers strongly focuses on leadership training? Last week, we revitalized our “Women in Cattle Feeding,” where our female leaders and aspiring leaders attended panels, facilitated workshops, worked through case studies, and hosted discussions about the challenges and unique strengths of being a woman in cattle feeding. We started this program in 2019 and are excited to bring it back and grow it to its full potential! #womenincattlefeeding #beef #cattle #cattlefeeding #5Rivers #FiveRiversFacts
