A new study from UC Berkeley found a dozen toxic metals—including arsenic, lead, and cadmium—hiding in commercial tampons. Sounding the alarm, researchers say chronic exposure could be increasing womens’ risk of infertility, cancer, liver damage, neurodegeneration, and more. While the FDA reviews new research and scientists further explore female physiology, companies are making information actionable. • Ditching single-use, Saalt sells sustainable menstrual cups, discs, and underwear. • Tacking taboo overseas, UK-based DAME | B Corp®’s reusables are chemical- and plastic-free. • Going holistic, Rael’s products span period supplies, supplements, and skincare. Beyond SKUs, startups are gaining trust by facilitating frank conversations around the female experience — supporting 75% of teens who feel society sees periods as “gross and unsanitary.”

Walking with a weighted pack is winning fans. And for good reason: • Rucking is linked to increased muscular endurance, strength, and bone density. • Rucking burns 30–45% more calories than walking, with less injuries than running. • Weighted step training improves lower-body power and functionality in older women, adding ~10 years to their independence from assisted care. Compounding the effect, most rucking occurs outside, delivering added boosts in lifespan, cognitive performance, and mental health.

Fewer people are answering the call of the wild. The OIA reported American outdoor recreation grew 4.1%, reaching a record 175M participants in 2023. Raising concerns, first-timers aren’t sticking with it. • The average number of outings per year fell 11.4% YoY, from 70.5 to 62.5. • Core recreators (very frequent participants) fell from 99.4M in ’19 to 88.4M last year. • The core cohort comprises <15% of all participants. Chronically stressed and stuck inside, too many people are missing out on much-needed adventure.
