First Step House is proud to announce we have been awarded federal and state Low Income Housing Tax Credits by the Utah Housing Corporation to develop new deeply affordable housing. The tax credit award, valuing roughly $13 million in equity, will fund the construction of a 67-unit permanent supportive housing complex at 44 North 1000 West in Salt Lake City. Tenants will have incomes below 35% of the area median income. 44 North Apartments will be jointly owned and developed by First Step House and Housing Connect. We are deeply grateful to the Utah Housing Corporation and the Utah Department of Workforce Services for making a bold commitment to increase the supply of supportive affordable housing in Utah.

Two of First Step House's dedicated community supporters, Jennifer Cottam and Laura Dorsey, reviewed the nominations, chose this year's recipients, and presented the awards at our biannual All Staff meeting. When we asked for volunteers this Fall, we weren't sure what to expect. We should have expected magic! ✨ Each time we have asked for help, our amazing community has stepped up and shown up. You have cooked dinner, served lunch, cleaned the kitchen, and shared meals in our treatment facilities. You even brought dessert! You catered a Thanksgiving feast for veterans. You built hygiene kits for men who show up for treatment without any belongings. You bought cleaning supplies for our new apartments. You helped us recognize and celebrate our staff who go above and beyond for clients. Volunteers, we love you! Thank you to every FSH volunteer for serving our community with compassion and understanding. First Step House is proud to provide case management to tenants transitioning out of homelessness, those with special needs, and veterans at Richmond Flats, a new 55-unit affordable housing project on the border of Salt Lake City and Millcreek. Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall, Salt Lake City Council Member Dan Dugan, Community Development Corporation of Utah CEO Todd Reeder, and First Step House Executive Director Shawn McMillen delivered comments at last week's ribbon cutting ceremony. “The need for affordable housing is felt in every part of the City, not just Downtown,” said District 6 Council Member and RDA Board Vice Chair Dugan. “It’s not every day, or even every decade, we are celebrating the opening of a new affordable residential development on the City’s east side, especially one that includes so many family-sized units.”

First Step House has been working hard to develop affordable housing in our community to help combat rising rates of homelessness in the Salt Lake Valley. After opening two apartment buildings in 2019 and 2020, the need continues to deepen. We have some exciting new housing programs coming! Trolley Lane We are putting finishing touches on 17 units of new sober transitional housing for clients needing a place to live after treatment, opening this winter. Stratford Apartments Opening next Fall, Stratford Apartments will give 46 people a permanent, supportive home. Northwest Apartments We plan to build 67 units of permanent supportive housing in collaboration with Housing Connect. Your generous support makes these projects possible.
