Living in the city is fine, but sometimes you just want to hit the road and head into the mountains. Consider visiting some of these underrated mountain towns. They give you the thrill of the mountains, often at a price that lets you keep more money in your bank account. 1. Durango, Colorado If you want to travel more often to mountain towns, Durango is a great place to start.  It is located in the southwest corner of Colorado in the Rocky Mountains. The elevation here is more than 6,500 feet, even higher than the Mile High City of Denver. Check out the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad when you visit, especially during autumn when leaves change colors. Look for locations that may have been in your favorite movies shot in the area over the years. 2. Leavenworth, Washington About a two-hour drive east of Seattle is Leavenworth, located in the Cascade Mountains of Washington. The town will make you feel like you have walked into a Bavarian village, which is why it can be a great place to celebrate Oktoberfest. You can also visit the town in winter when it’s decorated with plenty of lights for the holidays. 3. Eureka Springs, Arkansas Head to the Ozark Mountains in northern Arkansas to take in Eureka Springs. The town offers plenty of outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, and water activities. You can also stay in town and check out the art scene, with plenty of galleries and summer opera performances. 4. Red Lodge, Montana Red Lodge calls itself the gateway to Yellowstone National Park. Drive down the picturesque Beartooth Highway to one of the nation’s most visited attractions. The town also has plenty to do, from hiking and whitewater rafting in the summer to skiing at Beartooth Basin in the winter. 5. Crested Butte, Colorado Crested Butte is perfect for skiers wanting to get away for downhill fun. Here, you can take skiing lessons and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Rocky Mountains. If you prefer to visit in the summer, you'll find plenty of great mountain bike trails here. How do you compare? The 5 Worst Airports in the United States Airports can have a huge impact on the travel experience. We looked at several criteria across all major airports in the U.S. and came up with the 5 worst ones based on the following criteria: • flight delays in the winter and summer • TSA wait times • overall customer satisfaction (using the 2021 J.D. Power North America Airport Satisfaction Survey) • complaints filed against the TSA, and amenities Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) Among large airports, this airport earned the third worst customer service satisfaction ranking on the J.D. Power survey, and had the longest TSA wait times. Its departures are also delayed frequently. There are only two airport lounges at BWI. One is for U.S. military members, and the other, The Club BWI, is not affiliated with any particular airline. Outside of Boston, this hub is New England’s biggest airport. It makes our “worst of” list for bothl low customer satisfaction — third worst for mega airports on the J.D. Power survey — and a high number of complaints filed against the TSA. Despite being the 19th busiest airport in the U.S., the number of complaints submitted to the TSA alleging civil rights violations was similar to much busier airports, such as Dallas/Fort Worth International. Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) Newark Liberty ranks low in overall customer satisfaction, and, according to the Department of Transportation, flights going in and out of this airport are delayed frequently. Newark also has the longest TSA wait times of the 25 busiest airports in the country, despite being only the 15th busiest airport. Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) Located about 10 miles outside of Philadelphia, this airport serves millions of travelers every year as the 21st busiest in the country. It was also ranked the worst among all large airports in customer satisfaction. Those surveyed rated Philadelphia International poorly in categories like terminal facilities, food and retail amenities, and check-in experience. O’Hare International Airport (ORD) Chicago’s biggest airport is also the 4th busiest in the nation, and the worst in customer satisfaction for mega airports, according to the J.D. Power survey. Many reviewers cited poor signage and a difficult-to-navigate layout. However, when you get delayed, there are 15 lounges at O’Hare, for passengers of United, Delta, American Airlines, Air France/KLM, British Airways, SAS, and SWISS, as well as a USO lounge.
