Let's talk about the transparency in family planning options. Reserach published in 2023 revealed notable differences when comparing rates of depression between adolescent and adult users, women who took OCPs at any point (ever users) and those never treated with OCPs (never users). Among adult users, women experienced a 79% increased rate of depression within the first two years of OCP use compared to never users. The rate was even higher among adolescents, at 95%. Fertility awareness-based methods (FABMs) are a safe and effective family planning option for women, especially those who wish to avoid potential side effects like depression. Did you know that ginger is as effective as ibuprofen at relieving period pain? Ginger has been traditionally worked with to relieve menstrual cramps, headaches, vomiting, indigestion, and nausea. Due to it's anti-inflammatory nature, it's been mainly used for chronic inflammatory conditions (hello, endometriosis). When it comes to period pain, Ibuprofen (an NSAID) is commonly advised. Why? It reduces prostaglandins (inflammatory substances that naturally rise around the time of the period). The down side of NSAIDs are their side effects and contraindications -- like gastric ulcers and bleeding disorders. A 2021 meta-analysis revealed that ginger is just as effective as Ibuprofen at relieving period pain. Ginger also reduces prostaglandins, but has a much better safety profile! Instead of causing digestive problems, it soothes them. Ginger is also worked with to treat inflammation in other parts of the body: gingivitis, arthritis, autoimmune diseases, etc. It's anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties make it a great choice for endometriosis, too!
