'Rural communities reap the harvest of seeds sown helping others' During volunteers week, we spoke with three committed people who are actively involved in 'giving' to their local agricultural show, Turriff Show, Black Isle Show and Perth Show. To give is one of the five ways to wellbeing which forms the cornerstone of Farmstrong Scotland, a movement which is making huge strides in supporting farmers and crofters to look after themselves better. ‘Helping others’ was identified as having a positive impact to their wellbeing by 80% of respondents to Farmstrong’s initial research, conducted by SRUC in 2022. Interestingly, many people who give their time to others - from helping at the local school to picking up an elderly neighbour’s shopping - do not actually see themselves as volunteers. This is a sentiment that rings true for Sarah Mackie, who believes the farming, crofting and rural communities in general are full of people who “just get on and do what’s needed” without any fanfare... Our next Walk & Talk event is two weeks away today. Alisdair & Emma Davidson are kindly hosting the event at Poldean Farm, Moffat, on Wednesday 17 July from 1pm onwards. The Davidson's run 300 suckler cows and 450 breeding ewes over two Crown Estate farms, comprising of a mix of land types from rough hill ground to land suitable for growing crops. They have officially began organic conversion this year which has led to growing as many of their own inputs as possible to help improve efficiency, sustainability and profitability. We look forward to seeing you at Poldean Farm in a fortnight's time, as the family give us a tour around the farm, enjoy the views from the Moffat hills and have a bite to eat! What are you going to give to yourself and others today? When you give to others, not only do they benefit, but it also makes you feel a lot happier. Consider the ways you can give back to the people around you, and don't forget about yourself too. At the Royal Highland Show last week, we caught up with Farmer Andrew Barr, who told us what he finds is the most important way to 'give' in order to help his own wellbeing. Our friends at RSABI offer free counselling sessions. If this is something you think would be of benefit, please get in touch with them using their helpline number in the post below. #WorldWellbeingWeek
One of the most valuable pieces of feedback from farming folk we spoke with at the Royal Highland Show was how beneficial our free counselling service is. Demand for counselling from the farming community has increased steadily in recent years, with many farmers reporting a significant benefit after even just a few sessions. You can arrange counselling quickly and simply by calling our Helpline on 0808 1234 555. Please don’t hesitate to call. ❤️ #keeptalking #WorldWellbeingWeek #keephealthy
