Exciting news. We’ve got a new addition to the Factory Lisbon community… Welcome TUMO Portugal! Welcome 42! Don't know TUMO or 42? Both schools are internationally recognized for their disruptive pedagogical models. TUMO was founded in Armenia in 2011 to empower teens (12-18) in fields that cross technology and creativity, such as music, photography, cinema, animation, coding, robotics and game design. After Coimbra in 2023, TUMO Portugal is opening a new center in Lisbon, with programs for 1.500 students. 42 is one of the best schools for IT developers in the world. Founded in Paris in 2013, it targets people above 17yo, it’s free for all students and requires no previous coding knowledge. Joining Factory Lisbon is part of their strategy for growth, after opening a first Portuguese campus in Lisbon, in 2021, and a second one in Porto, in 2022. We can't wait to have all the TUMO and 42 students crossing paths around the building with our resident companies! And with that, Factory Lisbon is now full. Stay tuned for what’s next and some exciting events and activities we have planned for the community. #education #tumo #42 #factorylisbon Câmara Municipal de Lisboa Interactive Technologies Institute Hub Criativo do Beato MicroHarvest Web Summit

We have a new article and it's about Ricardo Passaporte, an internationally renowned Portuguese artist who’s been painting through the gap between suburban subcultures and eminent art galleries. His studio is locate in Xabregas [a neighborhood of Beato, in Lisbon], and has been for the past 9 years. The abundance of artists and creative studios in the east side of Lisbon has helped us strike a balance between business, scientific, technological, and creative minds, while curating a community as special as Factory Lisbon. #art #outsiderart #innovationhubs #lisboa

It's not a secret that Factory Lisbon has an undying love for the district of Beato, so we decided to start 2024 focusing on trying to give back and spend more time with our local community. We are running a program in partnership with adjacent high schools, bringing startup founders who we’ve known and admired for years to the school grounds, to tell the kids about entrepreneurship and other life choices. We would like to thank Anthony Douglas from Hole19 and Luísa Cruz from MicroHarvest for joining us in addressing the 9th graders of Olaias high school and hopefully inspire a few to help solve the world’s problems in the future. #stayinschool #entrepreneurship #factorylisbon

A throwback to earlier this month, with Factory’s Rahel Zoebeli speaking at the Touch Summit in Tbilisi, Georgia. Hosted in the beautiful, historic location of the Rustaveli Theatre, the two-day event consisted of international and local speakers providing insights on the Georgian innovation scene, regional startup ecosystem, and more. A special thanks to the organizers Natia Gogia, Beka Kvartskhava, Liza Kharazishvili for the invitation. Can’t wait for next year! #Touch23 Touch Platform

Meet MicroHarvest, a biotech startup working to develop and deliver the protein of the future. With a multicultural team of 26 (and growing), split between Hamburg and Lisbon, they're one of Factory Lisbon's resident companies. And we just love to have these mix of curious entrepreneurs and scientists walking our grounds. As they celebrated the inauguration of their pilot factory, we interviewed them for our monthly feature about friends & neighbors. #microharvest #sustainability #hubcriativodobeato #entrepreneurs

An update from our work in Cheltenham. The shares in our Joint Venture HBD x Factory Ltd. have been acquired in an undisclosed seven-figure buyout. More details here 👇

*Announcement*   HBD is buying out Factory's share in HBD x Factory Ltd. – the joint venture established to deliver the £1bn Golden Valley Development in Cheltenham – in an undisclosed multi-million-pound transaction.   After steering this project for a few years now, together with our partners HBD, this transaction leaves a bittersweet feeling for me in particular, and also for the team here at Factory. As we part ways with close friends, colleagues, and an exciting emerging project, we’re energized about what’s ahead.   First a quick recap:   Despite our earlier-than-expected departure, we're proud of what we’ve already accomplished, staying true to the key priorities we outlined.   → Progress Golden Valley’s position as a leading UK science and technology hub. From developing an innovative masterplan, organizing numerous events, securing features in renowned publications, and more, Golden Valley has transitioned from what was a napkin idea to a deliverable neighborhood. With our Planning Application now submitted, £95m commitment to fund the first building, and recent £20m government pledge to phase one, this becomes even more tangible.   → Help build bridges within Cheltenham, and beyond. “I’m finally seeing faces I don’t know”, a local entrepreneur told me once. Our early thesis was simple. Gather diverse audiences across the tech, creative, and impact sectors, and key local stakeholders – this ‘right mix of minds’ will encourage innovation. With hundreds engaged and trade delegations to Finland, Portugal, Estonia, and more now behind us, Cheltenham’s ecosystem is now seeing the benefits of a wider network effect. → Foster Cheltenham’s startup state of mind. Founders are the beating heart of an innovation ecosystem, and this is something we wanted to support and grow. With the launch of our Cheltenham Manifesto, Stories from Cheltenham series featuring local innovators, and countless sessions with local entrepreneurs, we’d like to think we started to move the needle. Seeing local founders now growing their businesses into Europe is one exciting outcome.   → Have fun. We’ve made some great friends along the way. With any complex multi-stakeholder projects, it’s often more than just business. It’s been a pleasure to work with new colleagues and partners who have become close friends over the years.   As always, we remain committed and excited to supporting districts, cities, and countries in their efforts to attract innovators and build technology hot spots. This is a personal passion and a shared obsession our team has built a business around. And we’ll continue collaborating with visionaries who share this same passion.   More news on these plans soon.   But for now, we’d like to thank all the supporters and friends who’ve been with us on this journey. There are far too many to list, so we’ll leave it at that.   Cheltenham, don’t be a stranger. :)
