Promoting Wellness, Nurturing Mental Health, and Fostering Excellence in Black Communities Across the Diaspora

🗣️ Yesterday marked my first testimony before the Maryland General Assembly Senate Finance Committee, championing Senate Bill 124 for annual coverage of behavioral health visits. The experience revealed the crucial need for mental health practitioners in policy discussions. Policy makers worked hard to understand concepts impacting our daily work, particularly the profound impact of policies on behavioral and somatic health. Notably, insurance companies opposed SB124, advocating for quick screenings in primary care over annual behavioral health visits. Their argument? Fear of burdening providers and limiting access. Yet, their limited understanding of mental health is evident, missing the diverse needs of individuals who may not show external symptoms. Mental health practitioners provide a vital perspective, understanding the nuances of individual experiences. My key takeaway? Therapists possess valuable skills beyond behavioral health, contributing essential perspectives to various industries. If your work involves shaping policies, laws, or organizational strategies, hiring a therapist can bring invaluable insights. Let's bridge the gap between macro-level decisions and the real stories of individuals in our society. I'm open to collaboration – let's make impactful changes together! 🌐✨ #Advocacy #MentalHealthPolicy #SB124 #PolicyChange #CollaborationOpportunity

"In our mental health policy work, we have consistently heard that definitions of “medical necessity” create challenges around access to mental health services and to reimbursement for providers offering those services." -Nia West-Bey Any conversation about mental health needs to include awareness of mental health policy, how it internalized, and impacts day to day living. https://lnkd.in/etpARkBd
