In this cross-sectional study, researchers found that a higher intake of carotenoids (alpha-carotene and beta-carotene) was associated with a lower risk of metabolic syndrome. This makes sense because carotenoids are phytochemicals that are thought to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. They are found primarily in fruits and vegetables. However, the study also had some limitations, namely that the cross-sectional data was not of high quality, confounding variables are difficult to control for, and the data was self-reported by participants. Answer: Lowered by 3.5 mmHg A 2024 randomized control trial that included 283 people 69 years old, on average, found that 32 minutes less sitting time per day could decrease blood pressure by almost 4 mmHg. This is similar to the change in blood pressure achieved by other lifestyle interventions, such as aerobic exercise, the DASH diet, or salt restriction.
