Recent data suggest individuals with migraine might not be accessing the prescription preventive treatment they need to better manage their condition. A new article (https://lnkd.in/gDvXdjBi) described the results from an online, self-reported survey of migraine stigma, quality of life, and symptoms in adults. In it, the authors classified respondents according to the frequency of migraine/headache and acute medication use. The high-frequency migraine/headache and medication overuse group (440/550 respondents, 80%) had ≥8 days per month with headache/migraine and ≥10 days per month of acute medication use over the last few months. Perhaps not surprisingly, this group experienced greater stigma, poorer quality of life, and more disability. These individuals were regularly using acute treatment — whether this was in place of or in combination with preventive treatment was not reported, but the respondents’ migraines were clearly not well managed. This is despite 93% having insurance coverage at the time. In our recent lunch and learn about migraine at Evidation, I talked about results we’ve seen from our migraine surveys completed by our community members every 3 months for the past year, complemented by their wearable data. For example we observed that 31% of our members eligible for prescription preventive medication for migraine used only OTC treatments, and these individuals were twice as likely not to have health insurance. For men, use of OTC treatment was associated with poorer sleep, as measured by wearables, when compared to men or women who use prescription medications. These insights, particularly when patterns emerge from combining multiple different surveys and objective data gathered from consumer wearables, help us better understand the lived experiences with migraines and identify gaps in treatment that we could try to address through physician and patient education and other targeted supportive services. Evidation and Sanofi are proud to share our newest published research, the Behavioral Engagement and Activation Model Study (BEAMS). Many individuals with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) could benefit from digital health technologies (DHTs) but don’t use them, or stop using them too soon. We partnered together to look at different groups of people with and without DHT use to understand who might require more tailored support to adopt DHTs and maximize their value. Key findings include: 💡 People with T2D who are more activated and have high self-efficacy for managing their diabetes are more likely to use DHTs, and to keep using them. 💡 There are a range of reasons why individuals don’t use DHTs, including privacy, cost, the technology itself, and motivation levels. 💡 Recommending DHTs to people with T2D who are already engaged in their care can increase adoption, highlighting the importance of a collaborative approach across stakeholders in developing, selecting, and implementing appropriate technologies. By considering the whole person – clinical characteristics as well as mindsets and behaviors – we can create better strategies to increase the use of DHTs, potentially leading to better health outcomes. What do consumers think about Weight Care? With so much conversation around the topic of weight care, we wanted to hear from consumers to understand their preferences. We collaborated with Evidation to deploy a series of 3 surveys over the course of 8 months across their population of millions of users - this unique approach enabled us to drill deep and followup on specific focus areas with the same consumers over time. Check out what consumers had to say! Julia A. Weight care innovation has been a major topic over the past few years, as GLP-1s continue to be one of the buzziest areas in healthcare. However, many of the conversations and media coverage focus on pharma, payers, provider, and employer perspectives. How are consumers themselves actually considering and experiencing weight care solutions? We wanted to find out, so we engaged Evidation to conduct a series of surveys on the weight care experiences and preferences of U.S. adults who have been overweight or obese. Key insights from the surveys include: • People use multiple methods to try and lose weight: Weight loss is challenging, and many people employ multiple approaches. 64% reported tying two or more weight loss approaches simultaneously; 66% of respondents reported losing less weight than they wanted to in their last attempt. • Consumers who want to try GLP-1s face barriers: Consumers who are interested in trying GLP-1s reported barriers to doing so—nearly half citing medication cost as the top deterrent; 41% were denied coverage by their health plans. • Clinician relationships are important: Respondents were most open to receiving weight care in person with a clinician they knew (58%). Only 15% who had tried GLP-1s did so through virtual channels. • There’s a market for long-term support: 48% of respondents using GLP-1s expected to use them long-term, which to us signals an opportunity to complement obesity medications with wraparound care programs and solutions. Our findings from these surveys highlight the importance of delivering personalized tools and programs for weight loss—virtually and in-person. Weight care isn’t one-size-fits-all, and consumers are looking for weight care partners to tailor approaches to their preferences, needs, barriers, and lived experiences. The team at Rock Health, together with real-world data company Evidation, undertook a survey to ‘…better understand the weight care experiences and preferences of U.S. adults who are overweight or obese.’ From an initial cohort of 150,00 respondents, 10,000 were reported upon, i.e. regard to approaches to weight loss, access to treatment modalities, barriers to receiving GLP-1 meds, combined approaches to weight loss, and desired weight care support. Almost all respondents were or had utilized exercise [88%] or diet [84%] as a weight loss modality, with just 11% for GLP-1 medications, and 4% for bariatric surgery. Virtual coaching companies of high usage were Noom, WeightWatchers and Omada Health; NOOM, WeightWatchers and Alpha were the most utilized among those that had been prescribed GLP-1 medications. Despite their extensive marketing approaches, I was surprised to see Ro at just 3% of the GLP-1 coaching companies, and hims & hers not even on this list. Whilst this data is informative rather than prescriptive, I do agree with the authors that ‘…Weight care is not one-size-fits-all. Effective solutions must be adaptable to diverse preferences while promoting sustained engagement amongst consumers.’ https://lnkd.in/eTy7ixMi
