🌐 Webinar Recap: From Contamination to Clarity – Finalizing PFAS Drinking Water Regulation 🌊 We recently hosted a webinar discussing the critical updates on Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) drinking water regulation. Here are the highlights: 💡 Introduction to PFAS and Regulations PFAS are chemicals found in products like firefighting foams, fabrics, and food packaging. Over 9000 PFAS substances have been identified, with 430 commercially procured by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). States vary in their regulations, some more stringent than others. 📜 Final PFAS National Primary Drinking Water Regulation (NPDWR) Effective April 10, 2024, the new PFAS regulation sets Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) and Perfluorooctanesulfonic Acid (PFOS) at 4.0 nanograms per liter (ng/L) and introduces a Hazard Index (HI) for PFAS mixtures. 💧 Treatment Options Best Available Technologies (BATs) include Granular Activated Carbon (GAC), Anion Exchange (AX), Reverse Osmosis (RO), and Nanofiltration (NF). 📊 Compliance and Impact - Over 66,000 water systems will need to comply with the new PFAS NPDWR. - Initial monitoring starts on June 25, 2024. - 6-10% of systems may need to reduce PFAS levels to meet standards. 🔍 UCMR5 Data Insights 24 PFAS detected; larger and groundwater-based systems show higher rates of MCL exceedances. 🔑 Key Takeaways - New regulations are stringent for PFOA and PFOS. - Approximately 6-10% of Public Water Systems (PWSs) may need action to comply. - Larger and groundwater systems are more likely to exceed new MCLs.
