We have talked out Epolin’s line of Visible Opaque dyes which block visible light and allow Infrared through, but did you know there is a product which does the opposite? They are called IR cut filters and they will block Infrared light while passing through the visible part of the spectrum. There are a wide range of reasons why blocking the infrared is helpful including improving camera and vision systems ability to display color correctly. Most of the CMOS and CCD systems in our cameras that detect light and help image the picture have a much wider range of sensitivity than our eyes which can only see a portion of the spectrum. Most of these systems can see well into the Infrared and that energy is captured and interpreted on the sensor. This can produce images that are distorted in color compared to what our eyes can see. By using an IR cut filter we can narrow the spectrum that the sensor sees, so that it matches our own and the image comes out with the correct colors. In some cases these cut filters are installed in devices to they can be mechanically moved into the on or off position. By making it switchable, a camera system can have accurate color representation during the day with the filter in place and at night the IR cut filter can be removed so the additional IR portion of the spectrum will provide a basic form of night vision that is commonly seen on doorbells and security cameras.
