“My fellowship has given me the space to be myself in how I approach outreach and how I express love and support to others, particularly, the underrepresented. It has reminded me that what I offer as a professional and as a human being has value.” Read how Featured Fellow Camille Williams empowered the underrepresented across Vietnam in her story here: https://lnkd.in/eA2iUjy7 #LifeOfAFellow #ExchangeOurWorld #ELFellow

About us
Through the U.S. Department of State’s English Language Programs, the world is your classroom. Since 1969, the English Language Programs have sent thousands of highly qualified and experienced U.S. educators in the field of teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) abroad to assist U.S. embassies in delivering and maintaining quality English language programs. The English Language Programs is the premier opportunity for TESOL professionals to impact the way English is taught abroad. By completing projects designed by U.S. Embassies in more than 80 countries, English Language Fellows and Specialists work closely with local teachers, students, and education professionals to improve English language teaching capacity overseas. Program participants serve as representatives and cultural ambassadors of the United States and, through a unique cultural exchange, they support the U.S. Department of State’s public diplomacy mission abroad. These programs are competitive and challenging, and the professionals selected to participate represent the best of the U.S. TESOL community. Program participants have the opportunity to gain deeper experience in areas such as teacher training and curriculum development, create innovative cultural programming, and hone other skills that can greatly enhance their TESOL careers. The English Language Programs are funded by the U.S. Department of State through the Office of English Language Programs in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The programs are administered by the Center for Intercultural Education and Development at Georgetown University.

Throwback Thursday featuring Janet Raskin! As an #ELSpecialist in Khartoum, Sudan, in February 2020, Raskin (pictured in the center) adapted twenty folk stories for radio broadcast, coordinated recording sessions with #ELFellow, Kathleen Hershner (shown on left) and volunteer readers, and set up guidelines for a digital handbook of follow-up language activities. Raskin’s immersive cultural experience learning about and exploring the folk culture, history, geography, and food of northern Sudan was also reflected in the folk stories. “At times, it felt like I wasn’t just adapting the stories, I was living them. It was as if the stories came to life as I was adapting them.” Read the story at the link in our profile. #SpecialistAlumni #ExchangeOurWorld

Last year in honor of #Juneteenth, #ELFellow Natalie Murray and #ELSpecialist Sean Huges collaborated with the university-wide English Conversation Club in Irbid, Jordan to commemorate the holiday. Students participated by presenting on African-American leaders, sharing food, and indulging in Jordanian coffee. From discussing former President Barack Obama to highlighting notable works by authors Zora Neale Hurston and Dr. Maya Angelou, it proved to be a cross-cultural experience for both the students and facilitators. #ExchangeOurWorld

“Real and imagined doubts crowded my mind… Can I be a native speaker if I speak three other Indian languages? And can I truly be an American in Egypt when I’m often an Indian in America?” Listen to more of Natasha’s experience with “Mistaken Identity” as an #ELFellow in Egypt. https://lnkd.in/etvykXCA
