Expansion of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure for Heavy-Duty Trucks in California The availability of accessible electric vehicle (EV) charging tailored for trucks in the US is limited, as most electric truck fleets rely on their charging infrastructure at their home bases. However, the Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach ports plan to invest $25 million in charging infrastructure for heavy-duty electric drayage trucks. This initiative is part of a larger $135 million effort to expand California's charging station network for commercial EVs. The plans include up to 207 charging stalls across the Los Angeles area and a charging corridor from Los Angeles to Las Vegas along Interstate 15. The long-term goal is to establish accessible charging stations for fleets of heavy-duty EV trucks around major cities. #energyone #ports #usa #ev #mhdv #electrictrucks #evcharging #california #charginginfrastructure #investment #cleantransportation https://lnkd.in/eB4Numw4

US Power grid - Demand for electricity reaches pre-pandemic levels The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports a return to pre-pandemic electricity consumption levels driven by increased demand from data centers. Annual U.S. electricity sales to commercial customers in 2023 totaled 14 billion kilowatt-hours (BkWh) more than in 2019, with Virginia and Texas showing the highest demand growth. Duke Energy Corporation has announced agreements with tech giants to accelerate clean energy deployments in the Carolinas. The EIA expects U.S. electricity sales to the commercial sector to grow by 3% in 2024 and 1% in 2025. Additionally, there are concerns about the co-location of data centers with generators, with Exelon and American Electric Power (AEP) protesting a proposed co-location at a nuclear plant in Pennsylvania. #energyone #electricpower #powergridmodernization #datacenters #energyconsumption #cleanenergy #nuclear #carolina #pennsylvania https://lnkd.in/e_YSVQvP

A focus on MHDV by 2030 in the transition to electric vehicles in Europe - Germany. The German government has launched a project to build a nationwide fast-charging network for heavy-duty vehicles, aiming to decarbonize the transport sector by 2045. Last year, electric vehicles made up just 1.5% of the EU truck market. Still, Germany aims for around a third of its heavy road haulage to be powered by electricity or electrically produced fuels by 2030. The initiative aims to create a fast-charging network for trucks along highways, with plans to equip around 350 locations with fast-charging infrastructure. Transport Minister Volker Wissing stated that commercial vehicles account for around a third of Germany's transport sector greenhouse gas emissions, and while trucks' carbon dioxide emissions per kilometer have decreased, a rise in freight transport has boosted total CO2 emissions in the sector. #energyone #europe #transporation #evcharging #mhdv #trucks https://lnkd.in/ejJ-GK3x

USA - Montgomery County, Maryland, aims to become the nation's largest renewable energy-powered e-mobility project. AlphaStruxure began work on the Brookville Smart Energy Bus Depot microgrid in Maryland three years ago. They are starting a larger microgrid project at Montgomery County’s David F. Bone Equipment Maintenance and Transit Operation Center. The new microgrid will include solar, battery storage, and hydrogen production for fuel cell buses. The project aims to help Montgomery County achieve its ambitious emissions reduction goals, and it will be the largest renewable energy-powered e-mobility project for public fleets in the nation. The Bone EMTOC microgrid project, expected to be completed in 2025, is part of Montgomery County’s efforts to electrify its public transportation and meet the growing electricity demand from transportation and data centers. The county also invests in hydrogen fuel cell-powered buses for its sustainable transportation initiative. #energyone #hydrogencell #ev #fleetsmanagement #maryland #publictransportation #microgrid #emobility #smartenergy #bus #solar #battery https://lnkd.in/grvCbwXP

High heat in California requires upgraded energy storage capacity. During a California heatwave, the state's electricity demand peaks in the evening when solar panels stop generating power. To address this, California ISO uses grid-scale batteries, now contributing about 6% to the energy supply, and sends text alerts to reduce energy usage during peak hours. Despite progress, challenges remain, such as regulatory complexities and technical uncertainties. The state plans to increase energy storage to 41 gigawatts by 2045, up from about 3 gigawatts today, to address these challenges. #energyone #california #stroragetech #battery #electricitysupply #cleanenergy #energyusaving #gridreliability https://lnkd.in/erk56BZg

We're finally getting there with US transportation electrification! The New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) recognizes storage as viable. Electrification is essential for decarbonizing the transportation sector, particularly public transit fleets. Medium- and heavy-duty vehicles are a significant source of transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions, with goals set to reach 30% zero-emission vehicle sales by 2030 and 100% by 2040. While the adoption of electric buses is increasing, they only made up 2% of the U.S. transit bus fleet in 2021. The demand for charging infrastructure is expanding as adoption rises, and there's a need to address challenges such as higher utility costs and the impact on the electrical grid. Behind-the-meter (BTM) storage and distributed energy resources, like on-site energy storage and photovoltaic generation, are being leveraged to address these challenges and optimize EV charging systems' cost efficiency and energy efficiency. The New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is looking to transition all 5,800 buses to zero-emission by 2040 and is considering BTM storage a viable solution. #icws #usa #transportation #cleanair #ev #zeromission #solarpower #cleanmobility #transit #ev #bus https://lnkd.in/gncVqU97

Puerto Rico - Grid reliability under pressure A widespread power outage occurred in Puerto Rico, impacting more than 340,000 customers due to the shutdown of two power plants. The outage affected the capital, San Juan, and adjoining municipalities. Luma Energy, which is responsible for transmission and distribution, and Genera PR, which operates power generation units, are under scrutiny for the outage. Puerto Rico's governor expressed disappointment, calling the situation unacceptable. The outage led the mayor of San Juan to declare a state of emergency. Many residents voiced concerns about the limited information shared and requested accountability, particularly in light of the ongoing grid rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Maria. #energyone #puertrico #powergrid #hurricane #electricpower #outage #gridreliability https://lnkd.in/ercti-US

Avoid working from isolated perspectives; instead, strive for a collaborative and integrated approach as the most effective path to success. The transmission system needs to be, first and foremost, optimized to address the upcoming load demand that will result from the green transition, such as transportation and building electrification; continuous discussions and consultations between all stakeholders should be accelerated to make it happen holistically, timely, and efficiently.
