About us
The Environmental Law & Policy Center is the Midwest’s leading environmental advocacy organization. We advocate, innovate and litigate to protect the Midwest's environment from the Great Lakes to the Great Plains. We show that environmental progress and economic development can be achieved together by putting sustainability principles into practice. We advance climate solutions effectively by accelerating clean renewable energy alternatives to conventional power plants and advancing clean transportation solutions. We protect the Great Lakes and defend the Midwest’s wild and natural places, and we fight for safe, clean water and healthy clean air for all. We combine effective public interest litigation with strategic policy advocacy, sound science, and economic analysis. ELPC produces strong results for the environment in the courtrooms, boardrooms, and legislative hearing rooms across the pivotal Midwest states and in Washington D.C.

On Thursday, Michigan’s Supreme Court handed down a decision confirming that Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has robust authority to issue environmental permits that will protect Michigan’s waters from pollution. In response to the Court’s decision, Rob Michaels, Managing Attorney at ELPC, said: “The state Supreme Court got it right. EGLE will now be able to focus on drafting effective, science-based permits that protect Michigan’s waters, which are the lifeblood of the state’s identity and economy. We applaud the ruling and look forward to EGLE exercising the full extent of its authority to control the hazardous waste generated by concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and other industrial polluters."

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) can fix Lake Erie's toxic algal bloom problem with a more targeted plan to clean it up, but "Ohio EPA isn't recognizing that sound science," said ELPC Executive Director Howard Learner to The Blade.

We're pleased to share that ELPC's David McEllis, our Illinois Legislative Director, has been selected to participate in the Edgar Fellows Program starting in Fall 2024. The Edgar Fellows Program is a leadership initiative designed by former Illinois Governor Jim Edgar to inspire respectful collaboration in addressing the state’s major challenges. The Fellows selected for the class of 2024 reflect Illinois’ political, racial, ethnic, and geographic diversity. They include elected and appointed officials from all levels of government, leaders of non-profit and labor organizations, and individuals who are influencing public policy in the business world. It’s an honor and a great opportunity for David to advance his skills, knowledge, and networks. Bravo, David! https://lnkd.in/gBCp88Wz
