📣UPDATE📣 The Virginia House and Senate leadership thankfully reached an agreement to repeal the precedent setting unwelcome changes to the Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents Program(VMSDEP) that would have made attending college a financial uncertainty for this vulnerable community. Thanks to our partners, the grassroots efforts of Virginia military families, and Friends of VMSDEP for their hard work to achieve this significant step forward. We look forward to monitoring the vote on July 18! 👏
The Elizabeth Dole Foundation has partnered with 30 other organizations representing veterans, caregivers, survivors, and their families to express our concern about the potential national precedent that recent changes to education benefits in Virginia might set if enacted. The House of Delegates fortunately voted to repeal the changes on Friday and the Senator will consider the same today at 2 pm! I was deeply moved by the “Children of War” segment that re-aired last night on 60 Minutes that features the important work of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation in supporting military and veteran families. The story serves as a reminder that the cost of war isn’t always visible, and millions of families, importantly children, are making sacrifices for our freedoms every day. I'm proud to serve on the Board of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation. The work of the foundation is critical to the health and wellbeing of our nation’s 5.5 million military caregivers. As an association that exists to serve the military community and their families, USAA is committed to lifting these organizations up to ensure veterans and their caregivers have timely access to the resources they need to take care of our nation’s wounded, ill and injured veterans. Important news for our community of Veterans, their Caregivers, and family members who are dealing with cancer. Thank you Dr. Shereef Elnahal and team U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for this announcement and for your leadership.
PLEASE SPREAD THIS MESSAGE TO ANY VETERAN WITH CANCER, OR VETERAN CANCER SURVIVORS If you are a Veteran exposed to toxic burn pits during the Gulf War or post 9/11 missions in the Middle East who later developed cancer, VA can now offer you more benefits and care than ever before. First, you qualify for VA health care as of March 5th of this year, just because of your service to the nation on these missions, and REGARDLESS of any conditions that you have. VA can offer you some of the best cancer care available. And second, if you do have cancer, it is possible that those cancers will now be considered service-connected if you file a claim— over 120 cancers in 13 different categories are now considered presumptively connected to burn pit exposure. And we just added 3 new cancers: male breast cancer; urethral cancer; and cancer of the paraurethral glands, to that list. When President Biden signed the PACT Act into law nearly 2 years ago, this extended what he calls the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ sacred obligation to those who wore the uniform to protect our freedom. I am honored to help execute on that bigger mission every day, as we expand more care and more benefits to more Veterans. https://lnkd.in/dePZfrun

Tonight, 60 Minutes is re-airing "Children of War" featuring the incredible story of Liz Rotenberry and her family, which reminds us all the importance of mental health support for military and veteran families. Senator Dole and CEO Steven Schwab sat down with Scott Pelley to discuss the work of the Foundation and our efforts to support #HiddenHelpers. Tune in @ 7pm ET on CBS or Paramount+. As #PTSDAwarenessMonth comes to an end, we want to remind you that you are not alone. If you or someone you love is experiencing symptoms of PTSD, please reach out to the NAMI HelpLine https://bit.ly/3VLcVYx *This episode may contain sensitive content, including conversations around suicide and images of combat, which some viewers may find triggering or upsetting. The strength and resilience within our community is incredible and inspiring. However, if this 60 Minutes special teaches us one thing, it's that sometimes real strength means asking for help. The Elizabeth Dole Foundation recognizes the toll that caregiving takes on not only the caregiver but also the children of these military families. We are proud to work with amazing organizations like Wounded Warrior Project, Our Military Kids, and other members of our #HiddenHelpers Coalition to provide much needed resources to caregiving youth. 💜 We would like to extend a special recognition to Liz Rotenberry and her family for their openness in this piece. Bringing these issues to light is an important step towards greater access and support for those experiencing mental health challenges. Watch the full segment here: https://bit.ly/4aSEcid
