About us
Electronics Watch envisions a world in which the rights of all workers in the electronics supply chain are respected, workers' voices are heard, and working conditions are safe and decent. Our mission is to help public sector organisations work together, and collaborate with civil society monitors in production regions, to protect the rights of workers in their electronics supply chains. This requires that all electronics supply chains connected to public procurement, from mining to manufacturing, include: - Public buyers exercising social responsibility and making a tangible, measurable positive impact for workers that make the goods they buy; - Civil society organisations and democratic trade unions in production regions accessing industrial zones and workplaces to support workers in attaining their rights; - Employers complying fully with all applicable domestic and international labour rights and safety standards; - Brand companies and resellers disclosing suppliers and compliance data to the fullest extent possible and taking effective action to remedy labour rights and safety breaches in their supply chains according to their capacity.

Electronics Watch affiliates are warmly invited to register for our Annual Conference 2024! Under the theme "Public Procurement and the Evolving Due Diligence Landscape", the conference will take place from 6-7 November in Brussels, Belgium. It is generously co-hosted by the Flemish Agency for Facility Operations (Het Facilitair Bedrijf - Vlaamse overheid), with support from the Flemish Government, Vlaamse overheid). The Annual Conference facilitates learning and exchange at the intersection of socially responsible public procurement and labour rights, and provides a unique opportunity for Electronics Watch affiliates and monitoring partners to meet face-to-face. It will raise awareness about the issues workers are facing, and how they can be addressed through the public procurement process. "The collective leverage of public buyers means we can offer worker-driven remedy. Workers are kept informed and consulted on how to proceed throughout the remediation process which follows their grievances." Our work on grievance mechanisms as part of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH Initiative for Global Solidarity is featured in their latest 'Sustainability Forward' newsletter. It focuses on Malaysia, where our monitoring partner Tenaganita works to support migrant workers in the electronics industry. The terrible fire of 24 June at the Aricell lithium battery factory in Hwaseong, South Korea, is a tragic reminder of the cost workers pay to provide the world with electronic devices. At least 23 workers have been killed, and many others injured. Electronics Watch grieves for the victims of this disaster and their families, and stands in solidarity with all workers exposed to workplace hazards and exploitation. We add our voice to those of South Korean trade unions in calling for stricter health and safety standards in the industry, and better enforcement. Human beings are not expendable. The increasing global demand for lithium batteries should not come at the expense of the health, wellbeing, or lives of workers. I was so glad to join a panel discussing how best to address vulnerability and exploitation of migrant workers that work in global supply chains. We all agreed that workers need to be at the centre of strategies, policies and processes - not only on recruitment but also remedy. Check out Electronics Watch's Worker-Driven Remedy Principles. We'd love organisations of all kinds to use and adapt them to fit their context.
Always inspiring to see the scale of ambition of the Institute for Human Rights and Business's Global Forum on Responsible Recruitment #GFRR2024. It's great to have supported a discussion on #globalrecruitment challenges spanning Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe, with a focus on successful collaborations to tackle the issues #migrantworkers face globally. From poor pay and accommodation, paid time off to recruitment fees – we heard not only what matters to migrant workers but also how to best put those views front and center in approaches to drive responsible recruitment. 🌍🗣️ Bringing together multiple stakeholders from across sectors, the term “collaboration” was inevitably lauded. And with it came a multitude of positive examples of collaborations including: 🤝 The value of collaboration between businesses and public procurement to gain leverage in the electronics sector was highlighted, along with the challenges governments face in balancing the maximization of external investment and labor mobility with a focus on labor rights. Electronics Watch 🌐 Collaborations between companies, supported by #responsiblesourcing and legal teams, to increase leverage and jointly remediate recruitment fees 🌾 UK labor provider collaborations with sending and receiving company governments, including embassies, to bring workers into the agricultural sector through the UK agricultural workers’ scheme Pro-Force Limited 👏 Thanks to the fabulous Aarti Kapoor from Embode and Rachel Cowburn-Walden and Carola Galeppini from Unilever for representing AIM-Progress and our Ganapati project in Thailand and Malaysia proudly. And to panelists Rishi Sher Singh from World of Gears, Sumitha Shaanthinni Kishna from Our Journey, and Cindy Berman from Electronics Watch for a great opening panel sharing perspectives from Asia. 🔎 Useful tools shared included: 🔧Institute for Human Rights and Business #responsiblerecruitment register on company commitments, including the Employer Pays Principle: https://lnkd.in/dNgC9Fiw 🔧Verité tools, such as: - The recruitment fee cost calculator.
