Much has been written in recent days about the accomplishments of civic leader, businessman, public servant and philanthropist James T. “Jim” Morris, who died last week at age 81. You probably know that Morris was vice chair of Pacers Sports & Entertainment and did much over the past 50 years to raise Indianapolis’ profile as a sports and convention capital. What you might not know is that Jim Morris was a major supporter of the Eiteljorg Museum. Jim Morris helped create White River State Park, home of the Eiteljorg, Indianapolis Zoo and the Indiana State Museum. He supported efforts that brought a wide array of sporting events to downtown Indianapolis and helped launch Unigov and IUPUI. A member of the Eiteljorg Board of Directors from 2007-2013, Jim offered wisdom and insights to Eiteljorg committees. Members of the Eiteljorg since 1990, Jim and his wife Jackie Morris were Eagle Society donors and supported museum fundraising efforts and events such as Indian Market and Festival and the Quest for the West® Art Show and Sale. As art collectors, the Morrises hosted Quest for the West® receptions. Over more than 50 years, Jim Morris served in many important leadership roles -- including as a past chair of Lilly Endowment Inc. -- that helped transform our city. His later work with the UN World Food Programme to fight hunger and poverty in southern Africa and around the globe reflects his commitment to improving the lives of families and children. We at the Eiteljorg Museum join countless others around Indianapolis in remembering Jim Morris’ life of service. Our thoughts are with Jackie and the Morris family. The presentation features two visiting curators from the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI): Alexandra Harris, who curated "Why We Serve," and Rebecca Trautmann, curator for the National Native American Veterans Memorial at the NMAI. Why We Serve honors the generations of Native Americans who have served in the armed forces of the United States – often in extraordinary numbers – since the American Revolution.
