As a fully remote company, we appreciate any brand that makes it easier to take our laptops on the road. That's why we're proud to power climate impact at checkout with CompoCloset, the world's first composting toilet that separates solids and liquids, fits almost anywhere, has a patented agitator, and a smart LED light to know when the liquids bottle is ready to empty. So why composting toilets? Their co-founder and CEO, Richard Peter, was “living the van life” with his girlfriend, who suggested they put a composting toilet in their campervan. The concept of composting toilets was an easy sell: they are better for the environment and you can stay out of the grid longer with no need for hookups and no wasted water! However, at the time, composting toilets on the market were large, difficult to empty and clean, and it wasn’t uncommon to accidentally overflow the liquids bin (gross!). Richard saw an opportunity to make a sustainable, eco-friendly toilet that works in small spaces, is easy to clean, and (most importantly) doesn’t smell! 🌍 Grist's recent article highlights a crucial shift towards not just sustainability, but circularity. The term "circular economy" emerged from the environmental movement of the 1960s and '70s, envisioning a closed-loop system where all resources are conserved. This concept was rooted in the idea that our finite planet cannot sustain ever-growing resource demands, as highlighted by works like Kenneth Boulding’s "The Economics of the Coming Spaceship Earth" and the MIT researchers' "Limits to Growth". However, as Kevin Budris from Just Zero aptly points out, the phrase has been co-opted by large corporations to justify continued plastic use, often under the guise of greenwashing. The focus on plastics recycling—especially through controversial methods like chemical recycling—diverts from the core principles of the circular economy. Today, only 5% of plastics are recycled in the U.S., and many recycling projects either fail or result in downcycled products that eventually end up in landfills or incinerators. This isn't the closed-loop system envisioned decades ago. Instead of pushing more plastic into the circular economy, many environmentalists and researchers suggest we seek alternatives that don't rely on fossil fuels. Efforts like the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act and France's anti-waste law are steps in the right direction, aiming to reduce single-use plastics and increase the repairability of everyday items.
