Chief Economist David Schmidt breaks down the labor market data ↙
One of the big long-term trends in the labor market is the decline in the labor force participation rate as the population gets older and more people leave the labor force. Because the entire population 16 or older that is outside the military and noninstitutionalized is the base for determining the labor force, someone in high school and someone who is 95 and has been happily retired for decades are both counted in the calculation. To account for this, we can look at the microdata for the Current Population Survey and remove individuals who are retired from consideration, to see what impact this has on overall trends. One of the most noteworthy trends I see is the levelling-off of the retirement rate in recent years: outside of a COVID-induced spike in retirements, the retirement rate has largely been steady in Nevada since 2016, and the higher-and-lower states (10th-highest and 10th-lowest, or 20th to 80th percentile) have trended flat since 2022. If the Baby-Boom surge in retirement is levelling off, this should be reflected in the potential to start increasing the participation rate as larger, younger generations continue to enter the workforce. This can be seen in the movement in the non-retired participation rate, where the spread for other states has risen from 74-to-80% in 2015 to 76-to-82% in 2024.
