He came to DEOMI because he transitioned into the Social Actions Human Relations/Equal Opportunity Treatment (EOT/HRE) career field in the U.S. Air Force โ A career field he had passion and commitment for. Letโs see how his experience at DEOMI influenced his career. ๐ค ๐ซ๐๐ ๐ซ๐ฌ๐ถ๐ด๐ฐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐? ๐ฏ๐๐? ๐ฌ DEOMI exceeded my expectations. Coming from a civil rights background, I was inspired by my mother, Mamie McNeil Wade, and my cousin, Major General Joseph McNeil. DEOMI prepared me to follow their path, equipping me with skills in executive development, investigations, public speaking, and more. This foundation led to significant achievements, including being named HQ AETCโs EOT / HRE Program Manager of the Year in 1992 and returning to DEOMI as a guest speaker in 1993. ๐ค ๐พ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ซ๐ฌ๐ถ๐ด๐ฐ? ๐ฌ The โJohn Grayโ experience was transformative, teaching me to validate my perceptions. The facultyโs commitment to our growth was evident, fostering introspection and self-awareness. DEOMI made me a better professional and person. ๐ค ๐ฏ๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ซ๐ฌ๐ถ๐ด๐ฐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ซ๐๐ซ? ๐ฌ DEOMIโs impact is profound. I received the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Fayetteville โ Cumberland Human Relations Commission. My DEOMI education prepared me for roles in North Carolina local governments, addressing historical and contemporary community challenges. Iโve trained military leaders, managed HR for large organizations, and consulted on DEI globally. My doctoral research and volunteer leadership roles are rooted in my DEOMI foundation. My success post-retirement is built on the education I received at DEOMI. ๐ค ๐พ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ซ๐ฌ๐ถ๐ด๐ฐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐? ๐ฌ Mission accomplishment and quality of life are inseparable. Equity of treatment is crucial for mission success. A colonel once told me, โIf people violate military policies, they either have an education problem or an attitude problem. You address the former, and advise on the latter.โ This wisdom has guided me throughout my career. Gregg was one of DEOMIโs original faculty members, instrumental in creating the Instituteโs pioneering Human Relations program in 1971. He also served as an instructor for some of the Instituteโs first courses until 1973. ๐๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐โ๐ฌ ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฌ: ๐ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐๐ซ๐๐ ๐ ๐ค ๐ท๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐(๐) ๐๐ ๐ซ๐ฌ๐ถ๐ด๐ฐ. ๐พ๐๐๐ ๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ ๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐? ๐ฌ As one of the 16 original faculty members, I developed and taught courses in the โMinority Studiesโ and โBehavioral Sciencesโ sections. Our program was crucial during the Vietnam War, addressing significant racial issues that affected military operations and readiness. The Institute played a key role in mitigating these issues. It was one of the most important missions Iโve ever had the opportunity to serve in. The Institute was a life-changing experience for which I am grateful. ๐ค ๐พ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ซ๐ฌ๐ถ๐ด๐ฐ? ๐ฌ Helping establish the Institute was one of the most exciting and fulfilling experiences of my career. A standout memory was briefing the DoD personnel board about our proposed curriculum. They came in skeptical but left with a positive endorsement, allowing us to proceed with the first class of students. The most rewarding aspect was seeing our students gain knowledge and insight, and forming lasting friendships with fellow faculty members. ๐ค ๐ฐ๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐(๐) ๐๐๐ ๐ซ๐ฌ๐ถ๐ด๐ฐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ /๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐? ๐ฌ DEOMI laid the foundation for my entire career and much of my personal life. After DEOMI, I taught Race Relations at West Virginia University, worked with police departments and public housing authorities, and pursued a law degree. Iโve been involved in developing significant civil rights laws and have spent decades focusing on employment law and civil rights. The proactive efforts I learned at DEOMI continue to benefit others through my work. ๐ค ๐พ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ซ๐ฌ๐ถ๐ด๐ฐ ๐ญ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐? ๐ฌ A unified, cohesive military is crucial to our country, and DEOMIโs mission is to ensure that unity. HFC Graduate Director, Dr. Mustapha Mouloua, graciously introduced DEOMI to four simulation lab spaces, currently being used in his department. The experience enriched DEOMIโs understanding of existing simulation technology, how the technology relates to DEOMI's research efforts, and its applicability as a future mode of training and education at DEOMI. Today, we celebrated our ๐ ๐๐๐ซ๐ ๐๐ง๐ง๐ข๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐๐ซ๐ฒ ๐ What an amazing celebration it turned out to be too. ๐ This year, DEOMI Commandant ๐ผ.๐บ. ๐จ๐๐ ๐ญ๐๐๐๐ ๐ช๐๐. ๐ด๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ต๐๐๐ invited several former faculty members and alumni to join in the celebration. Among our special guests were ๐ฌ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฑ๐๐๐๐๐๐, one of the original Defense Race Relations Institute (DRRI) faculty members in 1971, and ๐น๐๐๐๐๐ ๐พ๐๐๐๐, former DEOMI Commandant from 2001-2005. Huge ๐ to Mr. Johnson, Mr. Watts, and the several other former DEOMI faculty members and alumni who were able to attend!
