Since 1971, we have trained more than 53,000 students, a milestone achievement made possible by the countless Military and Federal Civilian employees who helped make this Institute what it is today. 𝐃𝐄𝐎𝐌𝐈𝟒𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞: 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐲 𝐖𝐚𝐝𝐞 Meet Anthony Wade, PhD, senior consultant with WRP Consulting, LLC. He is a graduate of the 1981 Equal Opportunity Advisor Course. He came to DEOMI because he transitioned into the Social Actions Human Relations/Equal Opportunity Treatment (EOT/HRE) career field in the U.S. Air Force – A career field he had passion and commitment for. Let’s see how his experience at DEOMI influenced his career. 🎤 𝑫𝒊𝒅 𝑫𝑬𝑶𝑴𝑰 𝒎𝒆𝒆𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔? 𝑯𝒐𝒘? 💬 DEOMI exceeded my expectations. Coming from a civil rights background, I was inspired by my mother, Mamie McNeil Wade, and my cousin, Major General Joseph McNeil. DEOMI prepared me to follow their path, equipping me with skills in executive development, investigations, public speaking, and more. This foundation led to significant achievements, including being named HQ AETC’s EOT / HRE Program Manager of the Year in 1992 and returning to DEOMI as a guest speaker in 1993. 🎤 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒎𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒎𝒆𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝑫𝑬𝑶𝑴𝑰? 💬 The “John Gray” experience was transformative, teaching me to validate my perceptions. The faculty’s commitment to our growth was evident, fostering introspection and self-awareness. DEOMI made me a better professional and person. 🎤 𝑯𝒐𝒘 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝑫𝑬𝑶𝑴𝑰 𝒊𝒏𝒇𝒍𝒖𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒓 𝒃𝒆𝒚𝒐𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑫𝒐𝑫? 💬 DEOMI’s impact is profound. I received the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Fayetteville – Cumberland Human Relations Commission. My DEOMI education prepared me for roles in North Carolina local governments, addressing historical and contemporary community challenges. I’ve trained military leaders, managed HR for large organizations, and consulted on DEI globally. My doctoral research and volunteer leadership roles are rooted in my DEOMI foundation. My success post-retirement is built on the education I received at DEOMI. 🎤 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒂𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒄𝒖𝒓𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒇𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝑫𝑬𝑶𝑴𝑰 𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔? 💬 Mission accomplishment and quality of life are inseparable. Equity of treatment is crucial for mission success. A colonel once told me, “If people violate military policies, they either have an education problem or an attitude problem. You address the former, and advise on the latter.” This wisdom has guided me throughout my career. 𝐃𝐄𝐎𝐌𝐈𝟒𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞: 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐲𝐥 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝, 𝐒𝐫. Meet retired U.S. Army Command Sergeant Major Darryl Roland, Sr., owner of Roland Hypnotherapy Clinic. In 2023, Roland retired from the Orange County Schools-Orlando, after having served more than 30 years as a Diversity Consultant and Administrative Hearing Officer. 👏 Congrats! I returned in 1984 as student, after which remained at DEOMI as an Instructor/Facilitator. Later, I trained all trainers as the Chief of Professional Development. 🎤 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒎𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒎𝒆𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝒂𝒕 𝑫𝑬𝑶𝑴𝑰? 💬 Being a significant part of guiding students through their learned bias's to a positive experience and acceptance that we all have more similarities than differences. Learning to celebrate our differences. 🎤 𝑰𝒏 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒚(𝒔) 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝑫𝑬𝑶𝑴𝑰 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒅/𝒊𝒏𝒇𝒍𝒖𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒇𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒓? 💬 My training and experience at DRRI/DEOMI was directly responsible for my being promoted as the first Army DEOMI graduate and Race Relations/Behavioral Science Specialist to be promoted to Command Sergeant Major. 𝐃𝐄𝐎𝐌𝐈𝟒𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞: 𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭 "𝐁𝐨𝐛" 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐠 Meet Robert “Bob” Gregg, an esteemed attorney at Boardman and Clark Law Firm in Madison, Wisconsin. Gregg was one of DEOMI’s original faculty members, instrumental in creating the Institute’s pioneering Human Relations program in 1971. He also served as an instructor for some of the Institute’s first courses until 1973. 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐃𝐄𝐎𝐌𝐈’𝐬 𝐇𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬: 𝐀 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐠 🎤 𝑷𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏(𝒔) 𝒂𝒕 𝑫𝑬𝑶𝑴𝑰. 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒅𝒊𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒅𝒐 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒉𝒚 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒊𝒕 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒕? 💬 As one of the 16 original faculty members, I developed and taught courses in the “Minority Studies” and “Behavioral Sciences” sections. Our program was crucial during the Vietnam War, addressing significant racial issues that affected military operations and readiness. The Institute played a key role in mitigating these issues. It was one of the most important missions I’ve ever had the opportunity to serve in. The Institute was a life-changing experience for which I am grateful. 🎤 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒎𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒎𝒆𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝒂𝒕 𝑫𝑬𝑶𝑴𝑰? 💬 Helping establish the Institute was one of the most exciting and fulfilling experiences of my career. A standout memory was briefing the DoD personnel board about our proposed curriculum. They came in skeptical but left with a positive endorsement, allowing us to proceed with the first class of students. The most rewarding aspect was seeing our students gain knowledge and insight, and forming lasting friendships with fellow faculty members. 🎤 𝑰𝒏 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒚(𝒔) 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝑫𝑬𝑶𝑴𝑰 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒅/𝒊𝒏𝒇𝒍𝒖𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒇𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒓? 💬 DEOMI laid the foundation for my entire career and much of my personal life. After DEOMI, I taught Race Relations at West Virginia University, worked with police departments and public housing authorities, and pursued a law degree. I’ve been involved in developing significant civil rights laws and have spent decades focusing on employment law and civil rights. The proactive efforts I learned at DEOMI continue to benefit others through my work. 🎤 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒂𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒄𝒖𝒓𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒇𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝑫𝑬𝑶𝑴𝑰 𝑭𝒂𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒚 𝒎𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓𝒔? 💬 A unified, cohesive military is crucial to our country, and DEOMI’s mission is to ensure that unity. The Institute’s impact extends beyond the military, influencing broader society. I’m impressed with DEOMI’s evolution and continued academic refinements. I hope the personal interaction between students and faculty remains a core element of the DEOMI experience. The mission is about people and their diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. This landmark legislation outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, and paved the way for a more just and equitable society. #civilrightsact1964 As we reflect on the strides our Nation has made towards equality, let’s honor the courage and determination of those who fought tirelessly for this act by continuing to educate, advocate, and work together to uphold the principles of civil rights in our communities. 𝐃𝐄𝐎𝐌𝐈𝟒𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞: 𝐄𝐮𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞 𝐂. 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐧 We’re honored to spotlight retired Chief Master Sergeant Eugene C. Johnson, a distinguished veteran of the United States Air Force. His tenure –from 1971-1982 on active duty and from 1983-1997– was marked by exemplary service as a Trainer, Instructor/Facilitator, Chief Air Force Service Specific, Deputy Director of Academics, and Director of Curriculum Management, each of which helped to shape the future of military human relations. 𝐃𝐄𝐎𝐌𝐈 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐔𝐂𝐅'𝐬 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐬 On June 17th, DEOMI's leadership and research team visited the University of Central Florida (UCF), Human Factors and Cognition (HFC), Psychology department to meet with leading experts researching human performance through the utilization of simulation technology. HFC Graduate Director, Dr. Mustapha Mouloua, graciously introduced DEOMI to four simulation lab spaces, currently being used in his department. The experience enriched DEOMI’s understanding of existing simulation technology, how the technology relates to DEOMI's research efforts, and its applicability as a future mode of training and education at DEOMI. Today, we celebrated our 🎉 𝟓𝟑𝐫𝐝 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲 🎉 What an amazing celebration it turned out to be too. 🙏 This year, DEOMI Commandant 𝑼.𝑺. 𝑨𝒊𝒓 𝑭𝒐𝒓𝒄𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒍. 𝑴𝒊𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒆 𝑵𝒂𝒔𝒉 invited several former faculty members and alumni to join in the celebration. Among our special guests were 𝑬𝒖𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒆 𝑱𝒐𝒉𝒏𝒔𝒐𝒏, one of the original Defense Race Relations Institute (DRRI) faculty members in 1971, and 𝑹𝒐𝒃𝒆𝒓𝒕 𝑾𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒔, former DEOMI Commandant from 2001-2005. Huge 🙏 to Mr. Johnson, Mr. Watts, and the several other former DEOMI faculty members and alumni who were able to attend!
