We work on things that make democracy work better.
About us
Democracy Fund is an independent and nonpartisan, private foundation that confronts deep-rooted challenges in American democracy while defending against new threats. Since 2014, we have made grants of more than $275 million in support of those working to strengthen our democracy through the pursuit of a vibrant and diverse public square, free and fair elections, effective and accountable government, and a just and inclusive society. In addition to grantmaking, Democracy Fund advocates for better solutions and works with partners to grow philanthropic support for our democracy. Democracy Fund champions leaders and organizations who defend democracy and challenge our political system to be more open, just, resilient, and trustworthy. We believe experimentation, learning, and adaptation are key to the health and resilience of any system, whether it is our organization or the American political system. As grantmakers, we focus on listening and being of service to our grantees, who are visionaries and our collaborators, and on ways we can more deeply embed diversity, equity, and inclusion as our values central to the success of our work and mission. “If we care about ensuring voters from all communities have access to information they need and information they trust during this election, then we have to interrupt disinformation campaigns and inoculate people against them. We know that disinformation campaigns are targeting communities of color so foundations have to invest in those communities to help them push back.” DF's Josh Stearns discusses how we are working to ensure that our communities are ready for the disinformation campaigns in elections alongside Jacquelyn M. from DF grantee Media Democracy Fund.

🗞 ICYMI: News on the news 🗞 Check out yet another reason that local news is critical to our democracy:
"There isn't a partisan divide, in terms of trust in media, when it comes to hyper local community media outlets," Mythili Sampathkumar of The Center for Community Media told NPF Widening the Pipeline Fellows with CCM's Jehangir Khattak. "I think that's a very key factor as to why they're so important in elections coverage." https://lnkd.in/eBZkkhQH

🇺🇸 July 4th, 2024 marks the 10th anniversary of Democracy Fund! Today, we’re reflecting on the year so far, and on what lies ahead for our democracy. We know America’s political system is flawed and faces serious challenges. We also know that the pro-democracy field remains determined to address those flaws and to overcome those challenges. Earlier this year, nearly 200 funders and donors committed to making unprecedented changes to their operations to support nonprofits who support our election system. We were inspired by the number of signers to the All by April pledge. The momentum of the campaign was driven by recognition for the vital work done by organizations who help ensure the election process produces trusted results, fairly represents the will of the majority of voters, and reflects equitable participation — especially among communities of color. While we are still evaluating the full impact of all participants, we’re excited to share the results of the All by April pledge later this month, and you can read more about Democracy Fund’s contributions in our recent blog post. This holiday reminds us that only together, with our efforts and resources combined, can we build an inclusive, multiracial democracy that is truly open, just, resilient, and trustworthy.

#Health, including #healthcare delivery and health policy, and #Democracy, including #CivicEngagement and electoral participation, have traditionally occupied different lanes within #philanthropy. Spaces for cross-issue or multi-issue strategy and collaboration among funders remain limited. Join us next month, on Wednesday July 17th at 3pm Eastern, as we join forces with colleagues from the Democracy Fund to talk about our different experiences working more intentionally at the intersection of health and democracy. In discussion, we'll share practical strategies we have used to navigate the complex landscapes of healthcare, policy, and civic engagement. We must recognize how governing institutions impact the conditions for change in healthcare, health policy, and the social and economic drivers of health outcomes and equity. In equal measure, it’s imperative to recognize that full civic participation is limited when people struggle to meet basic health and safety needs. Together, we'll consider: 🤝 WHY health and democracy funders should build relationships and see each other as allies and colleagues 🔧 WHY and HOW to shift funding beyond programmatic work to include systems change, capacity-building, and ecosystems 💲 WHY and HOW to fund multi-issue organizations, with specific examples of organizations funded by both Rx and Democracy Fund Register to join us ⬇ full details below

Excited to be able to release this new report on how American attitudes about racial discrimination and immigration have shifted since 2020. At a time when a wide variety of racial equity efforts around the country are under attack by elite political actors, I think a fear many have had is that they are either being driven by or are reflective of shifts in the electorate. I think we convincingly present the case that many of these changes are relatively small and that they are much more likely to reflect changes to the information environments than some new long-term trend in the public. https://lnkd.in/g9DFWurK
