Empowering kids to dream big and finish strong

About us

Our mission at the Dave McGillivray Finish Strong Foundation is to inspire and empower youth across New England and beyond to increase physical activity, expand literacy, and build community and self-esteem though running, reading, and performing acts of kindness. Our vision is rooted in a belief that discovering a passion for physical activity, reading, and acts of kindness at a young age gives individuals self-confidence and self-respect, which empowers them to move forward—one step at a time.

  • Welcome to Team Finish Strong Elissa Kempisty! We’re thrilled to have you representing our team at this year’s Chicago Marathon. A fun fact about Elissa? She was an internationally competitive figure skater and picked up running after her retirement this past year! Elissa shared that she chose to support our foundation because she has “always loved to support the younger generations and find a way to give back to the sports community.” Thanks for choosing Team Finish Strong Elissa!

  • Jitka Gavdunova is working towards her goal of running all the major marathons by running on Team Finish Strong at this year’s Chicago Marathon, and we couldn’t be more excited to have her on the team! Jitka shared that, “joining the Finish Strong community allows me to make a tangible difference in the lives of others while pursuing my own fitness goals.” We’re so excited to help you get one step closer to your running goal Jitka, and can’t wait to see the difference you make through Team Finish Strong!

  • As part of our Running Is A Right program, the Dave McGillivray Finish Strong Foundation hosted a private event for patients of Shriners Children’s living with limb loss last month at the TRACK at New Balance, where specialists from Shriners Children’s Pediatric Orthotics and Prosthetics Services (POPS) helped them reach their running potential. Over 21 children took part in the event and 13 were fitted for new running blades, provided at no cost by the foundation, and had a chance to experience running and other activities on recreational prosthetics. We were also thrilled to offer the opportunity to engage with local sports celebrities and inspiring individuals who also live with limb loss including: Dave McGillivray, President of the Finish Strong Foundation and Boston running legend, Zdeno Chára, former Boston Bruin, Marko Cheseto, world record holder for a marathon by a double amputee, and Miguel Baez, first full-time amputee firefighter in the state. We are so honored to be able to host events like these, and it’s all thanks to the generous donations and support we receive from you all!

  • We’re thrilled to be welcoming Jameson Buttafuoco to Team Finish Strong for the Chicago Marathon! Throughout Jameson’s life he has given back through various community service projects including volunteering with youth sports programs and with the Special Olympics for multiple events. Jameson shared that he chose to run for our team because, “it connects my love for community service, love for exercise, and importance of literacy since my mom has been an elementary school teacher her entire career.” We’re so excited to have you run on Team Finish Strong Jameson, and can’t wait to see all that you do!

  • We are so thrilled to share that our foundation is one of 150 local nonprofits that will share in $30 million through Cummings Foundation’s major annual grants program. The Cummings Foundation has awarded Finish Strong $75,000 that we will receive over the next three years. As we see the impacts of our work grow, outstanding supporters like the Cummings Foundation are taking notice. This grant will allow us to keep promoting children’s fitness, literacy, and good citizenship!
