Check out the latest from Gary Warner on China’s recent war on fraud domains…
Today I was writing a piece for my Cybercrime & Doing Time blog about a curious number I saw while reviewing a UN Office of Drugs and Crime report about Chinese money-laundering. The report mentioned that China had removed 8.36 million fraud related domain names. That number seemed RIDICULOUSLY high to me! So, I dug in, with some help from my friends at CAUCE - the Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial Email. What I found was that they PROBABLY meant websites instead of domain names, but as John Levine and I searched through the Chinese Ministry of Public Security website, I found some fascinating facts about China's role both as the source of so much of this online fraud, but also what it looks like when a totalitarian state declares war on fraud, as they just did TODAY. China announce today a month-long "National Anti-Fraud Action" which will use a "Five-In" approach, meaning that Chinese citizens will see and be encouraged to spread anti-fraud educational messages in five areas: Community, Rural Areas, Families, Schools, and Businesses. The push is to help people learn how to not become a Tool or Accomplice to the fraudsters while setting off "a new wave of anti-fraud among the whole people and the whole society." I would LOVE to get my hands on these training documents if anyone in my network can help! (Which of you secretly work for the Chinese MPS? Please reach out, haha!) #Cyberfraud #China #OrganizedCrime #CryptoScam #InvestmentScam #Myanmar #PigButchering #OperationShamrock To see more details, please visit my Cybercrime & Doing Time blog for the story: "Millions and Millions of Fraud Domains: China attacks Illegal Gambling and Telecom Fraud" at:

As many Americans are hovering over their mailboxes, waiting for their #taxrefund checks to arrive, criminals are doing the same -- snatching those checks from the #USPS and then selling them on #Telegram, the criminals' favorite marketplace where crime goes unpunished. Our friends at Mitek Systems asked us about some of the "going rates" for stolen IRS checks -- "stimmys", if you're keeping up with your criminal slang. This seller is asking 8% of the check amount, but he'll give you a deal if you buy more than one. Another seller posts a Treasury check made out for a whopping $418k, again asking for 8%, but indicates he's willing to negotiate.

So proud of all of our analyst teams who competed in today’s Trace Labs CTF. Having a mentor like Gary Warner in the early days of your career is a game-changer, and is an integral part of our mission to build the next generation of #cybercrime fighters.
My legacy when I eventually retire will be the great work that my students go on to do after I spend time with them in the classroom, in the UAB Computer Forensics Research Lab, or as one of our analysts at DarkTower. Today was one of those Be Proud days. Trace Labs has a unique Open Source Intelligence Capture the Flag event where teams of four come together to “compete” but by doing so gather leads to help Law Enforcement solve real world Missing Persons cases. We work to help with Missing Persons throughout the year, mostly through my lab manager, Leah Perz and one of my supervisors Elissa Harika. Leah and Elissa did an orientation and training on #MissingPersons #OSINT investigations for our lab team and I did an #OSINT training for UAB’s DragonBytes Cyber Security Club. DarkTower encouraged their analysts to get involved by also sponsoring tickets for our analysts there. We ended up fielding FIVE TEAMS! Nineteen students (plus yours truly who stepped in late to fill a last minute vacancy) who had never done a CTF competed, and they did great! So proud of all of them! Even those of us who weren’t in the Top 20 learned from the experience and are anxious to come try again! UAB/DarkTower teams placed 7th, 12th, 16th, 33rd, and 79th out of 105 teams! Four of the teams played from my lab in Birmingham (in four different rooms - no sharing!) but you could hear the whooping and cheering when teams got a 300 point or 700 point find! Thank you to Trace Labs for hosting another great event and for giving this professor a chance to let the analysts see another side of the real world Analyst game! It isn’t all fraud, cybercrime and terrorism. I know several of these teams will be back to try again!

Celebrating a win for the good guys today! #osint #romancescams #intelligenceforgood
We are celebrating at Intelligence for Good today! Wanna know why? We were able to use Intelligence to accomplish Good for Edward Bryan today. Edward's identity was stolen and used in a romance scam. As a matter of fact, we identified 223 #Facebook accounts, 186 #TikTok accounts and 10 #Twitter profiles using his likeness and image. The victim of the romance scam brought a lawsuit against the REAL Edward Bryan, alleging that he was complicit in the scam. Today, Gary Warner was able to testify on his behalf and here's what happened....
