Giving back to the communities we serve. It's baked into our DNA. And it comes to life each summer as many of our DQ corporate employees volunteer at "Camp Gillette" in St. Paul, Minnesota. What's Camp Gillette you ask? It's a unique summer program that brings the essence of summer camp to patients at Gillette Children's Hospital, which cares for children living with brain, bone, and movement conditions needing specialized expertise. DQ employees spend a few days each summer at Camp Gillette bringing activities, arts and crafts, caricature drawings, and even face paint to Gillette patients and their families. It's one of the more fulfilling volunteer opportunities during the best days of the summer.

This week, our first DQ BLIZZARD & Burgers restaurant opened in Shanghai--it's the first DQ restaurant in China and currently the only DQ restaurant in Asia to offer hot food and treats. China is our fastest growing market—we have nearly 1,500 DQ restaurants in China. And the DQ BLIZZARD & Burgers restaurant is our future in the country. Along with our franchise owner, CFB Group, we plan to open 180 new DQ BLIZZARD & Burgers restaurants in China by 2034, including two more in Shanghai by the end of September.

Let’s meet our next 2023 DQ Red Spoon Award winner. As a reminder, DQ Red Spoon Awards are given to employees who provide outstanding service, deliver high-quality products, and create positive memories for all who touch DQ. Today, we recognize Tim Rhein, business consultant for the mountain region in the U.S. What is your role and what are your responsibilities? I have been a DQ business consultant for 10 years and am currently responsible for 30 locations in the mountain region covering portions of Colorado and Nebraska. Part of my responsibility is being a subject matter expert in many different areas. My main focus is helping to ensure that DQ operating standards along with proper systems and routines are being followed in every location, and to provide guidance, leadership and coaching along the way. I also work to ensure fan expectations are met. My ultimate goal is to work with franchisees to help them be successful by increasing their sales and profits. What do you like most about your job and why? I enjoy working to build long-lasting relationships with our franchisees and their managers as well as all of those on my team and throughout the company. I also enjoy being able to use my work experience, life experience, and expertise to support and encourage everyone around me to succeed. What does winning this award mean to you? It is truly an honor to be recognized with a DQ Red Spoon Award, especially with so many other very talented people around me. My accomplishments are only made possible by the support I receive from our franchisees, managers, their staff and my incredibly talented teammates across this organization. What do you enjoy doing when you're not at work? When I am not at work, I enjoy spending time with my kids and grandkids, hanging out with friends and family, attending church, and volunteering in various capacities. I also enjoy traveling and trying new restaurants. I also recently became engaged to my fiancé, Christine, and am excited to see what the future holds for us. One of the many benefits you receive when you accept a position on our corporate DQ team is tuition reimbursement. Mason E. is taking advantage of this wonderful benefit right now. Mason, a senior analyst on our finance team, is pursuing his MBA at the University of St. Thomas. He’s taking classes part-time in the evening to fit around his work schedule and plans to complete his degree in two years. “My evenings get a little hectic with school and a new baby at home,” says Mason. “But my boss has been great about my schedule. I’ve even had the opportunity to interview the executive vice president of our team for a class paper.” Mason says the degree will give him more experience and credentials that he hopes will allow him to grow into a DQ leadership role down the road.
