  • The small plant of the year winner is County of San Luis Obispo, Los Osos Water Recycling Facility. The Los Osos Water Recycling Facility is operated by San Luis Obispo County. It is designed to solve a Level III water resource shortage and groundwater pollution in a sustainable and cost-effective manner. The facility capacity is 1.11 million gallons per day (mgd), and is operated by Mr. Loveridge, Grade IV Operator and four operators. They are supported by an Administrative Assistant, Engineering, Lab, and Finance staff. Operators are responsible for maintenance, enhancing their overall skills. They receive continuous safety training and support two other plants, promoting their expertise and career growth. The County invests in their certification advancement by funding their training. Management ensures that each employee receives necessary training to attain their goals. The facility provides recycled water for groundwater recharge, a golf course, and agriculture users, with future connections planned. The facility has an excellent safety record, going more than 360 days without lost time. Hosted by Blake Brown from Central San and our featured trainer is Jay Sheffer from Metrohm USA. Ion Chromatography (IC) is an instrument that can be used to detect a wide variety of analytes with one analytical process for aqueous matrices, and is commonly used for the analysis of anions (i.e., chloride, fluoride, nitrate, nitrite, sulfate) by EPA 300.1.   • The Golden Manhole Award honors outstanding contributions to the collection systems field, celebrating both individual achievements and the support of their employers in promoting increased professionalism. This year's honorees: Daryl Lauer has been a dedicated professional in the water and wastewater industry since 2001. Currently serving as the Collections Superintendent at Carmel Area Wastewater District (CAWD), Daryl is an active member of CWEA. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated exceptional management skills and a strong commitment to maintaining high standards in collections maintenance. Shawn Spromberg has over 18 years of experience in Wastewater Collections, Water Treatment, and Water Distribution. Currently the Wastewater Utility Supervisor at CVWD, Shawn's extensive expertise and dedication to the field have greatly contributed to his success and the advancement of the industry.   • The Selma Kingsburg Fowler County Sanitation District took home the Collection System of the Year award in the Small category at this year's Annual Conference. This award recognizes outstanding maintenance programs, regulatory compliance, and safety & training procedures. With 30 dedicated employees, 23 of whom hold CWEA certifications, the Selma Kingsburg Fowler CSD team works tirelessly to maintain the highest standards of excellence. Formed in 1971, the district's preventative maintenance program is a testament to their commitment to quality. The staff ensures that the entire 173-mile collection system is cleaned bi-annually. They manage 24 pump stations and 12,700 sewer service laterals within the public right of way, showcasing a comprehensive and proactive approach. Through the implementation of the Sanitary Sewer Systems General Order and the Capital Improvement Plan, they have been diligently identifying and replacing deficient sewers. Their partnership with member cities on paving projects demonstrates a collaborative spirit and dedication to improving infrastructure efficiently and effectively. This award is a significant achievement and a proud moment for the district. Congratulations to the entire team for their hard work and dedication!
