🤑 "The Career Coach helping Ladies Get Paid" - Robin Roberts | 💸 Founder, Author & Entrepreneur | 🎤 Fortune 500 Speaker | 👩🎓Masters Certification in Financial Psychology and Behavioral Finance
The most surprising reason I’ve heard why someone DOESN'T negotiate their salary? They’re afraid they’ll get a YES. (You’re probably like, huh?!) Here’s why: they’re afraid that getting a yes will lead to higher expectations. Expectations that they won’t be able to live up to. They would rather fly under the radar, and make less money than have a potential spotlight on them. So many of us think our self-worth = our net worth. That’s why negotiating our salary is so fraught. Asking for more feels like a referendum on your entire identity, not just your paycheck. Let’s be honest: the whole experience of putting a price point on your value is friggin’ bizarre. Even my own mantras, “Get paid what you deserve” and “Know your worth” are complicated. Bottom line: you must separate your value as an employee (market forces: external) from your value as a human (priceless: internal.) That’s why I always joke that when you buy my book - or now, my brand new salary negotiation course - link in bio! - you should also get a therapist 😂 👉 I want to know: How have YOU learned to protect your sense of self from outside forces? Have you struggled to separate who you are from how others perceive - and pay - you? Comment below and share if you found this helpful!
