CPJ calls on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to: - Immediately grant independent access to news organizations seeking to access Gaza. - Release journalists arbitrarily held without charge. - Launch credible, transparent, and thorough investigations that meet international standards into the killings of journalists. - Revoke the law that allows the temporary banning of any foreign media outlet in Israel. No credible democracy engages in what is, in effect, a growing censorship regime. This must stop. #PressFreedom

In CPJ’s 2023 annual prison census, Turkey was the world’s 10th worst jailer of journalists—its most press-friendly ranking in almost a decade—with 13 behind bars, down from 40 the previous year. But the latest numbers don’t tell the full story. “Russia’s decision to jail Evan Gershkovich for 16 years on sham charges is outrageous,” said CPJ Program Director Carlos Martinez de la Serna. “Journalists are not pawns in geopolitical games. It’s time to stop hostage diplomacy and free him immediately.” #IStandWithEvan https://lnkd.in/eb-36Jrm

Decisions journalists make in the field covering political events have a direct impact on their safety and that of others. The risks inherent in this can never be fully eliminated, but careful planning and risk assessment can mitigate the dangers. 🚨CPJ’s risk assessment template makes sure you and your team are prepared: https://lnkd.in/dsCyTADd #USElections

⚡️ Our research shows how entrenched authoritarianism is globally, with governments emboldened to stamp out critical reporting and prevent public accountability. Meanwhile, Israel’s standing in CPJ’s 2023 prison census is evidence that a fundamental democratic norm—press freedom—is fraying as Israel exploits draconian methods to silence Palestinian journalists. ⛔️ This practice must stop.
