Improving Daily Physical Activity in COPD Individuals Daily physical activity is essential for COPD individuals and is part of their self-management. However, rehabilitation programs, along with educational sessions, may not always be enough to encourage these skills in some individuals. Researchers in Spain designed a study to evaluate the physical activity level of patients after they attended an educational session aimed at reducing sedentary behavior. Before the session, the patients´ activation or motivation/ involvement levels were determined using a Patient Activation Measure-13 questionnaire. An example of the most activated patient would be someone who is involved in self-management, works closely with health care professionals, and shows interest in maintaining their health. Patients' physical activity was monitored via a motion sensor a week before and after the educational session. Read what was learned in Persons With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and High Levels of Activation Improved Their Physical Activity Skills After an Educational Session in the latest issue of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases: Journal of the COPD Foundation. Smoking, a leading cause of COPD, is high among sexual minority (i.e., lesbian, gay, and bisexual) individuals. In a recently published article, researchers used data from 161,741 individuals (3.6% were sexual minorities) aged 45 and older, to better understand the link between smoking, which often starts in adolescence, and chronic respiratory disorders, which typically occur in adulthood, among sexual minority individuals. Read what they learned in Sexual Orientation Health Disparities in Chronic Respiratory Disorders in the most recent issue of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases: Journal of the COPD Foundation. The gut-lung axis is the idea that there is a connection between the gastrointestinal microbiome—the collection of all the bacteria, fungi, and viruses that live in our stomach/intestines—and our lungs. Studies have shown that COPD patients have unique microbiomes, which can lead to unique symptoms. In a recently published review, researchers from China summarize the role both the gastrointestinal and the respiratory microbiome play in the development of COPD. Read more in Exploring the Role of Gut-Lung Interactions in COPD Pathogenesis: A Comprehensive Review on Microbiota Characteristics and Inflammation Modulation in the latest issue of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases: Journal of the COPD Foundation. This #WorldBronchiectasisDay, help us #advocate for lung health. We are supporting three critical lung health issues that impact those with COPD, bronchiectasis and NTM lung disease: virtual pulmonary rehabilitation, supplemental oxygen access reform and development of new antimicrobial drugs to fight resistant bacteria. It is critical that people with lung disease can access their preferred form of pulmonary rehabilitation, whether in-person or virtually. The Sustainable Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Services in the Home Act would permanently extend coverage of virtual pulmonary rehabilitation administered through a hospital under Medicare. Individuals who require supplemental oxygen cannot always access the most appropriate type of oxygen for their needs. The Supplemental Oxygen Access Reform (SOAR) Act ensures that anyone who requires supplemental oxygen has that access. Antimicrobial resistance is a growing issue, particularly for those with lung disease. The PASTEUR Act would jumpstart development of much-needed, new antimicrobial drugs to fight resistant bacteria. Take action today! https://copdf.co/advocate #WorldBronchiectasisDay #WorldBronchiectasisDay2024 #bronchiectasis #advocacy
