The American Institute of Architects (AIA) COTE Top Ten Awards are the industry's best-known award program for sustainable design excellence. In 2018, the Georgia Institute of Technology, Krone Engineered Biosystems Building (EBB) EBB provides 218,880 square feet of flexible interdisciplinary laboratory space for researchers collaborating in the fields of Chemical Biology, Cell Therapies and Systems Biology. The project creates a unique environment that connects people from multiple disciplines and departments to focus on specific societal problems in a holistic manner. A departure from traditional lab structure, the “cross-cutting lab” implements continuous working lab space running down the spine of the building, with offices and meeting rooms in the wings. Daylight, outdoor views, a water harvesting system and other biophilic elements used throughout the program encourage interaction. Technology and intelligent design work together to create a multi-purpose open space with high levels of ecological performance. A big shoutout to our partners at Hoar Construction for hosting the Development 201 Panel last week at their offices in McLean, VA. The expert panel included leaders from Hoar Construction, Lerner Enterprises, VIKA Companies, LLC, and from our very own Cooper Carry, Samantha Bennett and Heidi Leinbach. From Project Feasibility to Scheduling and Budgeting attendees learned ways to overcome the toughest project challenges (or as Christopher Champagne of VIKA, might say, “opportunities”) with panelists weighing in with their own experiences and how they made the best of complex situations.

From a parking lot to a 101,000-square-foot (SF) facility for the Virginia Tech Myers-Lawson School of Construction, Virginia Tech's Hitt Hall features over 20,000 SF of general instruction with a 160-person classroom, a 120-person classroom, and an 81-person TEAL (Technology Enhanced Active Learning) classroom, in addition to multiple seminar rooms, meeting rooms, and student spaces. The project also includes a 30,000 SF dining facility to provide much-needed relief to the over-utilized, award-winning campus dining facilities. It features two chain restaurants, a diner, a smokehouse concept, a café, a convenience store, as well as four other concepts, a centralized kitchen, and seating for over 700 students. The brands for each of these outlets were designed by Cooper Carry's Branding team, with the Experiential Graphic Design and Interior Design team rounding out the experience for each.
As we put the finishing touches on Hitt Hall at Virginia Tech, we thought it would be fun to see how we got to the finish line! Today’s #TransformationTuesday features Hitt Hall’s construction over the last two years. With a 600 seat full-service dining hall featuring nine unique dining venues, along with the home of the Virginia Tech Myers-Lawson School of Construction, Hitt Hall is sure to be a Hokie favorite for years to come! #construciton #buildthebest #buildwhatmatters

The The American Institute of Architects (AIA) COTE Top Ten Awards are the industry's best-known award program for sustainable design excellence. This year, The Biomedical Sciences and Engineering (BSE) Education Facility at the The Universities at Shady Grove was recognized as a COTE Top Ten award winner. The BSE was designed to optimize the built environment’s impact on human and environmental resiliency – making it one of the most sustainable laboratory buildings in the country. Biophilic strategies drove the LEED Platinum design, resulting in a delicate environmental footprint that enhances human health through access to daylight, healthy air, and views to nature while restoring the adjacent wetland. 87% of the BSE's occupied spaces have exterior views complemented by natural materials like reclaimed wood, living walls, and water features – fostering feelings of wellbeing and improving productivity.
