Thank you for sharing your experiences and speaking with us today, Haben Girma!
"Small changes can have a huge impact on accessibility." - Haben Girma speaking at the Computing Research Association semi-annual Snowbird conference. Her thoughtful and creative talk described the importance of innovation in the space of computing and accessibility and the inclusion of disabled people in universities, tech companies, and just everywhere. "When we design for disability, we pave the way for technology innovation." It's so easy to think that we can't do anything because we can't fix everything or to rage at the systems that aren't yet built for everyone. It's so easy to forget how designing for disability helps everyone. It was wonderful to hear Haben's story, how small changes along the way made a difference for her, and how she now serves as a disability advocate making those changes for everyone else. I particularly liked the point that "sometimes tactile techniques beat visual techniques." This is true even for sighted people. We need disabled people as part of our design teams so that we can think about things in radically different ways. She is also hilarious. #DisabilityPrideMonth You can buy her book here: https://lnkd.in/gQwkC6_i

In our ongoing coverage of the Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25) federal budget process, we turn to the House Appropriations Committee’s Energy and Water Development bill which outlines the budget allocations for the Department of Energy’s Office of Science (DOE SC) and ARPA-E. While the increase overall for DOE SC is minimal, the committee recommends ASCR receive a substantial increase for FY25. The House Appropriations Committee released its Commerce, Justice, and Science bill, which includes the budgets for the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institute of Standards & Industrial Technology (NISIT), and the NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The legislation is a mixed bag of funding increases and cuts for each agency, with NSF receiving a small increase, NASA seeing minimal change, and NIST taking a cut.
