Emily Touloukian, DO, president and CEO of Coastal Cancer Center, knows that medical fellows are key to shaping the future of independent community oncology. That’s why Dr. Touloukian demonstrates to physicians-in-training the value of practicing in the same community where they live through the COA Fellows Initiative. “Showing fellows how rewarding community oncology can be is the best way to build our workforce and protect access for the millions of patients who rely on independent clinics,” says Dr. Touloukian. “As a health care system, we need to think about what the person sitting in front of us needs. That should be the guiding force of equity and starts with getting to know your people.” – Richard Martin III, MD, MPH, of Tennessee Oncology Missed the latest COA Patient Advocacy Network chat? Days can mean the difference between life and death—so what happens when #PBMs ignore a prescription for lifesaving oral chemotherapy? For Jeanine, a patient with brain cancer, this was reality. Her oncologist prescribed a new oral chemotherapy because of a health decline. The oncologist immediately sent the script to the #PBM-mandated specialty pharmacy while receiving prior authorization from insurance. The PBM was silent for five days, significantly postponing treatment. Read other PBM Horror Stories of good people who put their trust in their insurance companies and received in return the worst possible treatment.: https://bit.ly/4f2T3c8 #PBM

Tomorrow, the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability is holding a hearing to examine how PBM middlemen drive up health care costs, hurt independent physicians, and impede patient care. We're encouraged to see this issue gaining bipartisan support and we thank the Committee for making policymakers and regulators aware of the abuses that PBMs enact upon patients and providers. All cancer care stakeholders must continue working together to stop PBM abuses that hurt patients. It's time for PBM reform. https://lnkd.in/eZWRT4_D #PBMs

#PBMs are abusive middlemen. We’ve highlighted dozens of stories documenting and exposing the inhumanity of these faceless bureaucracies. Read how a 33-year-old mother diagnosed with stage 3C low-grade serous ovarian carcinoma was denied her medication refill multiple times after switching to her husband's insurance plan. The plan used a different PBM, and the prior authorization reviewer who denied her medication had no knowledge of her condition or its treatment. Unable to pay $15,000 a month out of pocket, she became clinically depressed. It took three appeals, daily calls, and intense pressure from Congress to get her the life-saving medication she needed.
