"Shades of Parallel Oppression: South Africa’s Apartheid and North Korea’s Songbun as Crimes Against Humanity" [By SoEun Park, July 24, 2024] For many, South Africa’s Apartheid evokes images of historical struggle and resilience immortalized in history books, while North Korea’s Songbun seems distant in the confines of a closed-off regime. Despite the vast geographical distance between the two countries, these seemingly disparate systems exhibit notable parallels in their mechanisms of oppression and control. As Nelson Mandela and countless others grappled with the chains of Apartheid in South Africa, North Koreans endured—and continue to suffer—the oppressive grasp of the Songbun system. Both Apartheid and Songbun are tainted by state-sanctioned discrimination and human rights abuses. https://lnkd.in/g_qWD9un #NorthKorea #KimJongUn #Songbun #NelsonMandela #YPWP #songbunsystem SoEun Park

"NGOs push companies for update on investigations into Uyghur and North Korean labor in seafood supply chain" (SeafoodSource, 07/15/2024) A group of NGOs have sent a letter to separate seafood distributors and retailers asking for an update on their investigations into whether their supply chains were exposed to Uyghur or North Korean labor. The letter calls for an update on the investigations companies said they were performing in the wake of multiple reports by the Outlaw Ocean Project on forced labor in seafood supply chains. The letter was signed by 18 NGOs: Transitional Justice Working Group, Human Trafficking Legal Center, The Committee for Human Rights in North Korea, Advocates for Public Interest Law, HanVoice, The Citizens Alliance for North Korean Human Rights, etc. (Chris Chase, SeafoodSource) https://lnkd.in/gxSJWXkC #NorthKorea #HRNK #HumanRightsViolations #humantraffickingawareness

"CHINA’S DISRUPTION OF MARITIME SANCTIONS ENFORCEMENT" By Wu Yang, HRNK Research Intern (HRNK YPWP, 07/09/2024) North Korea's nuclear weapons development and sanctions evasion, aided by sophisticated maritime practices and Chinese interference, challenge global security. Despite UNSC Resolution 2397's strict sanctions, North Korea continues illicit activities. The Pacific Security Maritime Exchange counteracts these evasions, but Chinese harassment of enforcement efforts undermines their effectiveness. China's mixed enforcement of sanctions diminishes their impact, signaling tolerance to North Korea. Effective enforcement is crucial for leveraging negotiations and ensuring North Korea's compliance. Will North Korea Soon Have MIRV Capability For Its Ballistic Missiles? [By Bruce Bechtol Jr.] On June 26, 2024, the North Koreans conducted a test of what they called MIRV technology, claiming the test “aimed at securing the MIRV capability". Pyongyang also claimed that during the test, the North Koreans “successfully conducted the separation and guidance control test of individual mobile warheads.” The DPRK also claimed that the mobile warheads were guided to three separate targets. This is the first time that North Korea has publicly announced that it is testing a multiple warhead ballistic missile capability. International Forum on One Korea 2024 Explores U.S. Support for a Free and Unified Korea (Global Peace Foundation, 06/06/2024) Amongst other prominent panelists, HRNK's Executive Director Greg Scarlatoiu and Board Members David Maxwell and Dr. Sung-yoon Lee joined the Global Peace Foundation's “International Forum: One Korea 2024," held at the U.S. Capitol on June 6, 2024. The forum highlighted providing global support to help end North Korea's human rights abuses and prepare for future unification. As Mr. Maxwell stated, “We must support the Koreans. The Koreans have to solve the Korea question, but I think we all, as human beings, fellow citizens of the world, have a responsibility to help Koreans help themselves. So, with that, I will say we know one dream and one Korea.” To learn more, please see a recording of the forum on GPF's Youtube, here: https://lnkd.in/gJn5ZskW (Robin McDonough, Global Peace Foundation)
