About us

Columbus Museum of Art’s mission is to create great experiences with great art for everyone. Whether we are presenting an exhibition, designing an art-making activity, or giving visitors directions, we are guided by a vision to connect people and art. CMA nurtures that connection and removes barriers between our community and our collection. CMA’s galleries are filled with works that manifest creativity. Our collection includes outstanding late nineteenth and early twentieth-century American and European modern works of art. We house the world’s largest collections of works by beloved local artists Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson, Elijah Pierce, and George Bellows; and acclaimed collections such as The Photo League and the Philip and Suzanne Schiller Collection of American Social Commentary Art. A commitment to contemporary art, folk art, glass, and photography continues the Museum’s dedication to showcasing art of our time. CMA is where creativity and the daily life of our community intersect and thrive, as we champion new and different ways of thinking and doing. We celebrate the creative process and provide opportunities for people to cultivate and discover the value of creativity in their own lives.

Our Deputy Director of Learning & Engagement, Jennifer Lehe, shared this image from last week's Summer Institute for Authentic Learning, of participants winding down after a long day of learning. Jen's featured session explored the Cultivating Creative & Civic Capacities framework (C4) as a set of "roles" for creative change. CMA is happy to connect with featured local artists, educators, and speakers as well as partner with Partnerships for All on this annual conference to reimagine, reconnect, and empower. Let's go to the Fair! With the Ohio State Fair open this week at the Ohio Expo Center & State Fairgrounds, we're thrilled to share a glimpse into our upcoming fall exhibition, "Ming Smith: Transcendence," opening September 19. Step back into the 1990s with Ming Smith's evocative images, capturing the landscapes and scenes of her youth. This collection includes visions of her childhood home, her family’s former neighborhood, family members, and the vibrant Ohio State Fair—a place of joy and wonder where Smith worked as a teenager. "Being a black woman photographer was like being nobody. It was just my camera and me. I worked to capture black culture, the richness, the love. That was my incentive." — Ming Smith Join us this fall at the Columbus Museum of Art for "Ming Smith: Transcendence." Immerse yourself in the vibrant scenes of the Ohio State Fair and relive the nostalgia of a beloved summer tradition. Youth residents under 18 receive FREE SUMMER ADMISSION at CMA! General admission is free for youth residents of the city of Columbus through September 18, 2024. This initiative is generously funded by the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department through The City of Columbus Summer Youth Programming Grant. In April, Columbus Mayor Andrew J. Ginther and Council President Shannon G. Hardin announced $20.8 million in city funding for summer programming for Columbus youth. The purpose of the grant is to support high-quality programming throughout the summer months, benefiting young people across Columbus. By investing in summer youth engagement at CMA, the funding will help the museum expand opportunities for Columbus youth to build creativity skills essential to academic performance and workforce readiness, two key pillars of the grant program. In addition to free museum admission, the grant supports Summer Art Breaks held every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, July 30–August 15, from 10:00 AM–1:00 PM. Summer Art Breaks are also supported by Battelle Photo taken by Emma Parker's Photography.

Spotlighting Disability Pride Month Museums are wonderful places for new experiences and sensations. While sensory input might be especially complex for neurodivergent folks, everyone has different sensory needs. To help everyone have a great visit, we offer a few helpful items. Just ask for a sensory kit at the welcome desk, which includes: • Noise-reducing headphones: Available in both child and adult sizes. Let us know which you prefer. • Fidgets: Everyone loves fidgets, and we have a few types. These might be especially helpful since we can’t touch the art. • Sunglasses: Sometimes bright lights can be as startling as loud noises. These can be useful in spaces with lots of windows or high-contrast artworks and videos. We also provide a map showing areas that might become crowded or noisy. You can find this map on our website’s Accessibility page to help plan your visit. If you're in the galleries and realize you need any of these items, ask a Gallery Associate for the nearest route to the Welcome Desk. You can also stop by the Comfort Room in the Center for Creativity. Here, you'll find all these items in a cozy space with dim lighting and comfy chairs. Our Studio has these items too, plus weighted blankets and a sensory hour at the beginning of each Open Studio session. Please ask the Welcome Desk if you’d like to borrow these items for your visit. When you’re finished, kindly return them so they’re available for other guests. #DisabilityPrideMonth

Blog Post: Aminah Robinson Legacy Project Discover more about A.J. Verdelle, our 2024 Aminah Robinson Writing Resident, in our latest blog post "One Day, in the History of Columbus, Ohio." "Winning a fellowship does not prepare you for the intimacy of this artist’s house...That day in Columbus, there you stand, in her kitchen. She stood there once, on many days. Many nights. Many sweeps of the paintbrush, many dreams of DaVinci. One day in the history of Columbus Ohio, I was there, she was there, every pair of eyes who came through the kitchen-side door was there."
