Today is the anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlawed discrimination based on race, religion, or national origin. This would not have been possible without the sustained action of thousands of people in the Civil Rights Movement — especially the Black organizers who risked their lives for our civil rights and the right to the ballot box.

With over 7 million members… Color Of Change is the largest online force taking action on behalf of Black people in America. Both corporations and our government make decisions every day that impact Black people and our communities. With our members’ needs and voices leading the charge, we fight to hold decision-makers accountable, and win changes that matter: in the criminal justice system, in the media, in the workplace, in the economy, in our democracy, everywhere. Founded in response to Hurricane Katrina… where government officials failed to meet even the most basic needs of Black people in crisis, and where the media promoted unfair, inaccurate, and dehumanizing images of Black people to rationalize it – our purpose is to make the voice of our community both un-ignorable, and powerful enough to change the system. If we act together strategically, creatively, and collaboratively, we believe creating a less hostile and more human world for Black people – and all people – is possible.

From May 31 to June 1, 1921, mobs of white Tulsa residents attacked Black residents and destroyed the city's Greenwood District, where a historic Black Wall Street thrived. Since then, the local government has transformed Greenwood into a whitewashed commercial district. We demand reparative policies and true justice for Greenwood and Tulsa's Black residents.

Color Of Change, a racial justice advocacy group, said in a letter to Scholastic: “The inclusion of Black and queer characters, authors and stories in school book fairs is not optional. We call on Scholastic’s leadership to remove this exclusionary feature and commit to taking meaningful action to protect Black and LGBTQ books.” The organization praised the company’s reversal on Wednesday with the hashtag #DefendBlackHistory. ———���— I'm incredibly proud of my team for leading this campaign and glad Scholastic reversed their decision. Black and LGBTQ history will be protected and preserved. That is our mandate at Color Of Change.
