Eastern Montana Modern Architecture

About us

There is a unique culture and lifestyle derived from living and working in Eastern Montana. We call it Eastern Montana Modern. We love to share how our design practice draws inspiration from the landscape, history and inhabitants of the grasslands of Montana, the least-appreciated part of the Last Best Place. As architects and makers, our goal is to help the people of this region live better lives by creating buildings and objects with a beauty and functionality embracing their values. As lived for the past two centuries, the values native to the people of Eastern Montana are grit, authenticity, minimalism, community, and stewardship.

  • 🌟 Working with Montana's School Districts: Our Passion for Community and Education 🌟 At Collaborative Design Architects, we take pride in partnering with school districts to create inspiring educational environments. From brand new schools to enhancements of existing facilities, our expertise shines, especially within Montana's rural communities. Hometowns, like Bridger, MT, showcase an incredible sense of pride and ownership in their school projects. The community spirit here is truly unique as residents rallied together, eager to provide our design team with valuable input for their project. This collaborative approach ensures we create facilities that not only serve the next generation but also reflect the heart and soul of the community. We're honored to be part of such meaningful projects, investing in the youth and future of these vibrant towns. Together, we build more than just schools; we build legacies. Let's continue shaping the future of education, one community at a time. #BridgerSchools #MontanaPride #CommunityFirst #EducationalExcellence #RuralSchools #BuildingLegacies #FutureReady #SchoolDesign #CollaborativeDesignArchitects #LetsCollaborate

Great Quality is Worth the Wait I'm spending a few days in Grand Rapids, MI on behalf of Big Sky Economic Development on an aspirational city visit with the Billings Chamber Of Commerce. Good coffee is a must when I travel and Madcap fits the bill, but here's the catch... -They don't open until 8am- Today I decided to be late to our first session of the day in order to enjoy a superb cup of joe- it was worth it. As leaders of Visit Billings we must keep this simple principal in mind. I spoke with Randy Thelen yesterday and he reinforced this with respect to how Grand Rapids has transformed itself over the last 20 years. The coffee was worth the wait (John Brewer please forgive me) and the Wait will be worth it in Billings too. Forward.

  • Access to great destinations at affordable rates plays a big part in the growth of businesses in Yellowstone County- our team at Collaborative Design Architects was honored to contribute to this effort! Great job by Big Sky Economic Development and Billings Logan International Airport to make this happen!

The Billings community is poised for enhanced air service accessibility thanks to a generous sponsorship from the Montana Department of Commerce. With a commitment of $50,000, this sponsorship helps the Billings Air Service Committee meet the local match goal for the Small Community Air Service Development Grant (SCASD) grant requirement of $750,000. “Providing additional commercial flight access to Billings is essential to every rural and eastern Montana community,” said Paul Green, Director of the Montana Department of Commerce. “Montana is open for business. More flights to Billings opens Montana’s economy up for visitors and future businesses that will create good paying jobs for Montanans.” Read full release here: https://hubs.la/Q02tNWwq0

We are thrilled to share with our professional network the exciting news of the construction progress at Gallatin Crossing….in beautiful Bozeman, Montana. This highly-anticipated mall mixed-use redevelopment is currently in phase two and is now home to the very first Whole Foods Market in the state of Montana. Whole Foods’ commitment to high-quality, organic, and sustainable products makes it a perfect fit for Bozeman’s health-conscious community. In addition to Whole Foods, the first phase of redevelopment announced the addition of a new Medical Pavilion, currently under construction, projected to open later this year. The 45,000-square-foot Medical Pavilion brings together two of the region’s most established healthcare entities, SCL Health, now Intermountain Healthcare, and Ortho Montana PSC. Bozeman, nestled in the majestic mountain ranges of Montana is known for its breathtaking natural beauty and thriving community. As a vibrant and rapidly growing city, it is only fitting that a new, freestanding mall addition is being developed to meet its residents’ and visitors’ diverse needs. Our visionary planners and development team have created a design that blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, incorporating architectural features that pay homage to the region's heritage. The second phase of construction marks a significant milestone and brings us closer to the completion of this exceptional shopping destination. In addition to Whole Foods, this shopping center will offer a diverse array of retail, dining, and entertainment options, providing a comprehensive experience for shoppers of all interests.  This development holds immense potential to enhance the retail landscape, promote sustainable practices, and contribute to the economic vitality of Bozeman. With gratitude for our valued partners Corning Companies, John Morrow, The Broadway Company, Whitney Gallivan, Collaborative Design Architects, and Jonathan Kaplan.
