📰 NEWS RELEASE IT/CrowdStrike Outage Update in Cochise County   BISBEE, AZ. (07/24/2024) As you are likely aware, a major IT outage has affected organizations worldwide, including airlines, banks, emergency services, as well as here in Cochise County. The technology outage was caused by an update from CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity software company that provides services to the County. It is emphasized that the devices involved in collecting, tabulating, and processing votes or ballots are not connected to the internet or any external system (air-gapped). They do not receive automatic updates or changes. These systems remained completely unaffected by the CrowdStrike outage. ES&S, the company responsible for the County's elections equipment, issued a statement confirming their independence from CrowdStrike: "ES&S does not use CrowdStrike in any of our products or services. Our internal assessment shows no impact of this outage to our company, and there has been no impact to services we provide customers." It's important to clarify that the infrastructure supporting the County's operations (such as email and web servers) is separate from the closed, air-gapped network used for vote tabulation. As in other county offices locally and nationwide, some county infrastructure systems were affected by the outage. The IT Department worked with the Arizona Department of Homeland Security, the Arizona Secretary of State’s office, and CrowdStrike to resolve the issues before significant impact on operations occurred. “I am pleased with the coordinated and rapid response from the County IT team. The Systems and Cyber security teams were able to discover the cause and begin fixing impacted systems within minutes of our first reported issues,” associate County Administrator and Chief Information Officer Joe Casey said today. “Additionally, the entire IT Department worked together to get each employees desktop/laptop operational as they reported to work on Friday morning.  Neither votes nor election systems were impacted in any way.” On a broader county-wide level, no significant operational delays have been identified. The situation continues to be monitored closely, and updates will be provided as needed. ### Cochise County provides regional leadership and effective, high-quality services with personal and professional integrity. 🌟 Heroes at work! Alan Gordon and his team have been working tirelessly through the night to restore our county services, including SEACOM and the sheriff's department. Your dedication and preparedness during this major cyber incident are truly commendable. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to keeping our community connected and secure! 👏💻 #ITHeroes #CountyServices #CyberIncident #TeamWork ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ What happened❓ ⏸CrowdStrike’s security software is running on countless individual computers all around the globe — which means the update that got pushed to those devices caused them all to shut down, virtually simultaneously. And in today’s networked economy, an outage in one part of a supply chain can cause domino effects up and down the line. When multiple parts of a supply chain go down, it touches off a cascade of problems. Some affected machines may be rarely serviced by people or located in remote areas. Others may not even have monitors or keyboards plugged in, because they don’t regularly require humans to directly interact with them. The most extreme examples may include weather monitoring sensors or devices in railway signal boxes, Andrew Peck, a cybersecurity expert at Loughborough University in the UK, said, which could require technicians to physically visit potentially hundreds of thousands of machines to perform the recovery process.⏸

📰NEWS RELEASE Cochise County Attorney’s Office Celebrates Deputy County Attorney Michael Powell's Statewide Recognition BISBEE, AZ (07/18/2024) The Cochise County Attorney’s Office is delighted to announce that Deputy County Attorney Michael Powell has been awarded the prestigious 2024 Appellate Prosecutor – Felony of the Year award by the Arizona Prosecuting Attorney’s Advisory Council (APAAC). This honor was bestowed upon him at the annual conference for his exceptional contributions to appellate prosecution. The award, typically reserved for nominees from larger jurisdictions, recognizes Powell’s outstanding work on a Special Action appeal initiated by Santa Cruz County. While appellate cases are not within the routine scope of the office's work, Santa Cruz County sought assistance on a critical issue, prompting Michael to step forward. He filed an amicus brief in the Court of Appeals, addressing a significant evidentiary matter related to marital privilege in criminal cases. Powell’s diligent efforts resulted in a published opinion from the Court of Appeals, clarifying and safeguarding the limited scope of marital privilege in criminal proceedings. This accomplishment not only enhances legal clarity but also fortifies justice across jurisdictions. "We are immensely proud of Michael's achievements," stated Brian M. McIntyre, Cochise County Attorney. " The entire County can be proud to have such an amazing professional working daily to ensure justice in this County and even beyond. Congratulations DCA Michael Powell!" The Cochise County Attorney’s Office congratulates Deputy County Attorney Michael Powell on this well-deserved recognition and acknowledges his ongoing contributions to the pursuit of justice in our community and beyond.
