Your Water is Our Promise. 💧 Serving our community through 7 areas of service. Formed in 1918 to protect and conserve.

About us

CVWD was formed in 1918 to protect and conserve local water sources. Since then, the district has grown into a multi-faceted agency that delivers irrigation and domestic (drinking) water, collects and recycles wastewater, provides regional storm water protection, replenishes the groundwater basin and promotes water conservation. CVWD's service area covers approximately 1,000 square miles from the San Gorgonio Pass to the Salton Sea, mostly within the Coachella Valley in Riverside County, California. The boundaries also extend into small portions of Imperial and San Diego counties. The Coachella Valley’s idyllic winters make it a popular destination for tens of thousands of seasonal visitors and part-time residents who travel here from throughout the United States and many other countries to enjoy championship-level golf, tennis, polo, swimming, hiking, spas, fine dining and upscale shopping. These vibrant industries are possible in the desert because the district has been a responsible manager of water resources since its formation in 1918.

Updates

  • Exciting construction update! ✨ With the addition of our new T1 Pump Station at our Wastewater Reclamation Plant - 10, we are able to connect 21 new customers to our nonpotable water service – doubling our current service capacity and reducing the demand of groundwater to meet our customers’ irrigation needs. New customers of our recycled and nonpotable water service include golf courses and HOAs in Palm Desert, Bermuda Dunes, Thousand Palms, La Quinta, and Indian Wells. The project is expected to be fully complete by the end of 2024. Increasing the supply and use of nonpotable water is a key component of CVWD’s long-range water management plans that emphasize conservation, groundwater replenishment, as well as using recycled and imported water for golf, farm, and large landscape irrigation.

  • It was an honor to help kick off the 2024 CAPIO Annual Conference by hosting attendees for a behind-the-scenes tour of our Palm Desert Wastewater Reclamation Plant - 10 and Groundwater Replenishment Ponds. While visiting the area for the conference, Communications professionals from across the California public sector were able to get a first hand look at some of our water management operations and learn about the rich water history the Coachella Valley proudly holds. 💦🌟🚐 #infrastructureweek #CAPIO24 #wearecapio

  • Swipe through this gallery to follow a wastewater sample from its collection to the lab! ➡️💧🧪 Brianna, CVWD Wastewater Reclamation Plant (WRP) Operator, completes a Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids (MLSS) test to ensure that our biological system within our aeration basins is operating properly for effective recycled water treatment. Daily MLSS sampling data is critical for successful plant process control at our WRP-10 facility!

  • We’re charged up 🚗⚡️ and driving towards a greener future! You may notice an upgrade to our Meter Readers’ ride as we proudly announce the addition of 25 new electric vehicles, replacing 19 trucks in our fleet and providing shared vehicle options for all CVWD departments. We additionally installed 26 vehicle chargers with load-sharing tech that allows us to charge the vehicles with the current electrical service that we had in place. With these EV upgrades, we’re cutting down on gas emissions and making significant strides in our commitment to sustainability. Kudos to our Electrical Staff and support from our Carpenter Shop and Construction Crew for working tirelessly to bring this project to life! 🌟

  • Paving the way for the Eastern Coachella Valley!💧🎉 It’s an honor to celebrate a decade of dedication and $100 million in grant funding from federal, state, and county partners to bring clean, affordable drinking water and reliable sewer services to underserved communities. Over the past ten years, CVWD's Disadvantaged Communities Infrastructure Task Force has worked tirelessly to secure funding for projects aimed at connecting thousands of east valley residents to essential services. As Cástulo Estrada, CVWD Board Vice President and a founding member of the Task Force, stated, "These projects will change the region for generations to come." Access to safe drinking water and sewer services is a basic necessity, but more importantly, it is a fundamental human right. It will also be a catalyst for secondary benefits, such as housing developments and increased economic activity. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to CVWD’s dedicated District Board and staff for their unwavering commitment to these transformative projects. None of this would have been possible without the collaborative efforts and funding from our partners. 🤝

  • Now you see it, now you don’t. 🚜✨💦 Reservoir 3570-1 is our most unique yet. It is concrete-lined and 95% buried, creating a seamless hillside view. A fun fact about reservoirs is that they are typically placed at higher elevations so pressure can help push water down the pipes. Investing in our water system is important for efficiency, maintenance and reliable service! #infrastructure #construction #newconstruction #constructionprogress #beforeandafter #publicworks #watermanagement #droneview #djidrone #coachellavalley #cathedralcity #yourwaterisourpromise

  • Fill her up! 💦💦 We’re expanding our canal water storage with this latest project! The Mid-Canal Storage Project is a 4.9-mile regulatory storage reservoir located within the Coachella Canal. The project will create an in-line storage reservoir to remove the concrete lining within this section of the existing canal and the embankment between the existing and old canal. This will provide CVWD with greater operational flexibility. In addition, it will help eliminate recurring concrete lining repair costs. #YourWaterIsOurPromise #constructionprogress #construction #newconstruction #coachellavalley #watermanagement #waterview #publicworks #dronevideo #djidrone #californiawater
