Bye bye Baldwin! CMA’s Kemp’s ridley sea turtle patient was released by University of Florida Marine Animal Rescue this past week. This sub-adult turtle was found severely entangled in fishing line. Due to the severity of the entanglement, Baldwin’s left front flipper was almost completely detached and required amputation. The turtle had also ingested fishing line that was too far in the gastrointestinal tract to be removed orally. With the aid of gastrointestinal motility medications, Baldwin passed 300 cm of fishing line! Despite Baldwin's medical challenges, this turtle is now thriving and was able to be released back into the wild.

Rainy day release! Today, Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s sea turtle rehab team released Opal, a juvenile green sea turtle, into the waters of Fred Howard Park. Opal was found floating with issues staying submerged in New Port Richey on May 7th. After a few months of rehabilitation, Opal’s buoyancy issues resolved on their own and this turtle was healthy enough to be released back into the wild.

We've hit another nesting season milestone! Clearwater Marine Aquarium's sea turtle nesting team recently documented its 200th nest! In 2023, 227 nests were observed, so we're hopeful we'll soon surpass last year's nesting count. All marine turtle footage taken in Florida was obtained with the approval of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) under conditions not harmful to marine turtles. Footage was acquired while conducting authorized conservation activities pursuant to MTP-22/23-013A and MTP-22/23-263B.
