Today, Alexis Madrigal hosted a conversation about Richmond and Richmondside on KQED’s Forum show. Our Editor-in-Chief Kari Hulac and Reporter Joel Umanzor, along with Cityside co-founder and The Oaklandside Editor-in-Chief Tasneem Raja, talked about why we selected Richmond for Cityside’s third newsroom, what we heard from residents during our extensive pre-launch listening tour, and about some of Richmond’s challenges, as well as its many positive attributes. A diverse group of Richmonders sent emails and phoned in to the show to suggest ideas on issues that they believe should be investigated. It was a great discussion! #localnews #nonprofitnews #richmondca https://lnkd.in/d8rj24pi

Today, our The Oaklandside reporter Jose Fermoso sued Alameda County in federal court over an ordinance which criminalizes merely being present within 200 feet of a “sideshow” for the purpose of observing it. The First Amendment Coalition, who is representing Jose, says the law has prevented Jose from covering sideshows as a newsworthy public safety issue, and is a violation of his First Amendment rights. (Sideshows, which originated in Oakland, are informal, often illegal, automotive stunts held at public intersections and vacant lots.) #firstamendment #localjournalism #nonprofitnews #oakland https://lnkd.in/gfZzHq2m

🚀 We're thrilled to announce the launch today of our third newsroom in the Cityside family! Richmondside joins Berkeleyside (launched in 2009) and The Oaklandside (2020), to provide independent, free nonprofit news and information to the residents of Richmond, CA. We’re committed to providing trustworthy journalism and valuable information resources that enable Richmonders to better engage with and enjoy their community. Everything we do is informed by what we have heard from hundreds of Richmonders over the past year. With all the bleak news about the state of local news in America, we're so glad to be adding to the local news ecosystem right now! 🙏 Many thanks go to all our supporters locally and to our launch funders, Google News Initiative, American Journalism Project, the Knight Foundation, the Hellman Foundation, and The Lesher Family Foundation. Check out Richmondside and share the good news! #localnews #nonprofitnews #localjournalism #newslaunch #richmondca https://richmondside.org/

We are so honored that the League of Women Voters of Oakland has selected our Oakland newsroom, The Oaklandside, as the recipient of its 2024 Making Democracy Work award. “News is critical for a healthy democracy. It helps communities understand what’s at stake in local elections,” said Anna Mathai, the league’s vice president of record. “It helps them to get involved in the political process by voting, contacting officials, running for office, and it reduces political polarization, and holds public officials accountable.” #localnews #nonprofitnews #democracy #oakland #civicinformation #localelections https://lnkd.in/ggurPaZV
