Home of Purdue! Come for a Big Ten event, a degree, or a delicious meal. Stay for the community.
About us
On the scenic Wabash River banks in north-central Indiana, West Lafayette offers the culture usually associated with a Big Ten university town combined with a reasonable, Midwest-style cost-of-living. Due to Purdue University’s presence, a large percentage of our population has global ties. This diverse, well-educated workforce has led to a local economy rich in culture and variety. You’ll be entertained by university-related events — whether you’re watching a Broadway-style show or a stadium-pounding football game. But if you’re not satisfied standing on the sidelines, you’re welcome to play a round of 18-holes on a championship course or participate in a period reenactment festival. You can have the best of all worlds in serene but sophisticated West Lafayette. Big-city fun is just an hour away in Indianapolis or two hours up to Chicago. But come home to the perks of small-town living, alive and well through top schools, a low crime rate, and little or no commute times.

City of West Lafayette reposted this
One of the many perks to this job is working with Purdue students to make lasting impacts in our community. This is one of many examples! Excited to celebrate one of Indiana's oldest operating firehouses, which is under local historic preservation protection! Thanks EPICS MSE Bronze (MSE) !
This semester we have two new projects on the MSE Bronze EPICS team. Both teams are working to sand-cast aluminum plaques to be displayed at historical locations near Purdue. The Fire Station 1 team is designing a plaque for West Lafayette Fire Station 1. West Lafayette Fire Station 1 is located at 300 North Street, West Lafayette, Indiana. It was built in 1917 to house the West Lafayette Fire Department. The station has had a very storied past, housing firefighters, police officers, and even city officials. An interesting piece of information is that this station has one of the very few working fire poles in the state of Indiana. The station is still in service today after 106 years of providing emergency response services to the citizens of West Lafayette. Our team is working with Bryce Patz of the West Lafayette Historic Preservation Commission (WLHPC) to commemorate the history of this building.

Make an Impact; serve with Us! The City of West Lafayette is pleased to announce that our Parks and Recreation Department has secured a grant in partnership with Serve Indiana (https://lnkd.in/dUhq86iQ) that will allow AmeriCorps members to serve in our community for 2023-2024. The Parks and Recreation Department seeks enthusiastic AmeriCorps members to help us improve our public parks, enhance watersheds, restore native habitats, develop environmental education programs, and engage with the community. "Launching this exciting initiative for Parks and Recreation has taken nearly two years of preparation. Not only will West Lafayette parks and open spaces benefit from service members' efforts, but our staff and community will also." - Bryce Patz, Community Forestry and Greenspace Planner. AmeriCorps members commit to serving with the Parks and Recreation Department for a period of 3, 6, or 10 months. Members will be improving green spaces in West Lafayette. The mission of the West Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department is to enhance the quality of life in the city by connecting its citizens to the best possible parks, recreational facilities, and programs. Our AmeriCorps program aims to further develop and conserve our public greenspaces through service experience. The department is seeking AmeriCorps members interested in park restoration efforts. Project members will participate in reducing the impact of invasive species, restoring native plants and habitats, reducing erosion, protecting watersheds, increasing public safe access, including Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, and protecting flora and fauna. Improvement will be consistent with an accepted natural resource restoration, maintenance, or improvement plan. The priority area for this upcoming AmeriCorps cycle will be Happy Hollow Park. Kathryn Lozano, Superintendent of the Parks and Recreation Department, "We are very excited to have the opportunity for AmeriCorps members to serve with our Parks and Recreation Department. This program grows new leaders and invests in our community and parks as a whole."
