Firefighters Receive Medal of Valor Awards During the City Council Regular Meeting on May 14, 2024, four Monroe firefighters were awarded with a Medal of Valor for their heroism and bravery in service of rescuing a woman from a burning building. Captain Keith Starnes, Captain Charlie Porter, Firefighter Josh Hawk, and Firefighter Chad Aldridge were among 25 firefighters who responded to an apartment fire on Fairly Avenue with reports of a person possibly trapped inside on the night before Thanksgiving: November 23, 2022. While searching one apartment, Captain Keith Starnes and Firefighter Josh Hawk found a woman unconscious on the floor in the living room. They immediately began moving her toward the back door. Firefighters reported heavy smoke conditions and fire rolling above their heads across the ceiling as they were removing her to safety. Captain Charlie Porter and Firefighter Chad Aldridge entered the apartment and assisted with getting the woman to safety and into the care of Union EMS. She was transported by EMS to the hospital where she recovered. “While all firefighters on the scene played a role in this rescue, these members entered a dangerous environment, quickly located the victim and brought her to safety. We’re certainly thankful to God for his protection for everyone in this incident,” said Fire Chief Ron Fowler. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eCKUuYZX
The Parks and Recreation Department hosted a dedication ceremony naming the baseball field at Sunset Park in honor of longtime volunteer coach Hunter Presson on Tuesday, May 21 at 11 a.m. Hunter Presson (1927-2023) was a dedicated and committed volunteer coach for the Monroe Parks and Recreation Department from 1955 through 1972 and provided his expertise as a Midget Football referee from 1968 through 1977. Parks and Recreation staff unveiled the new signs bearing Presson’s name: one on the infield and one on the outfield. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/evciMAPP
The City of Monroe's Natural Gas Division was recognized during the May 14 City Council Regular Meeting for earning the prestigious System Operational Achievement Recognition (SOAR) award by the American Public Gas Association (APGA)! The City of Monroe’s Natural Gas Division earned the prestigious System Operational Achievement Recognition (SOAR) award by the American Public Gas Association (APGA) for operational excellence! The City of Monroe was selected for SOAR level Bronze by its peers on the APGA Operations and Safety Committee out of approximately 750 APGA members. APGA evaluators were particularly impressed with the City of Monroe’s training and development efforts along with its emphasis on employee safety and empowerment. “We are thrilled to earn such an achievement in our first year applying to the program.
